A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Man, black people really are just like chimps fighting, with the ganging up and the smashing with their hands and such. There is not much you can do against such a horde without a weapon.
The amount of overweight nurses who tell patients to lose weight etc is ridiculous. There are so many at the hospital I work at, and I just don't understand, since there's so much walking and such (in my job at least), I do so many laps of the hospital in a single day that it's like I've done a full cross country. Not to mention all the stairs.

Also, the idea that she was in killing mode 24/7, serial killers aren't, they have gaps, and on overtime shifts she was likely to be even busier than usual and unlikely to attempt anything. And, if you read about other nurse / angel of death cases they often start by poisoning people to save them so they can feel like a hero; then one dies and they realise they can feel just as powerful through murder. So it's totally possible she could alternate saving and killing depending on what oportunities were available and whether she wanted to be seen as a hero in front of certain people; there was discussion early on that she did a lot of it to get the attention of one of the doctors there that she was trying to get into a relationship with. I don't think this is a smoking gun that she's innocent.
I kinda thought this was just common knowledge. Serial killers don't typically have quotas they need to fulfill. She probably had plenty of shifts where she either didn't feel like she had opportunity to kill, didn't really fancy it, she felt like the heat was on her and needed to lie low, or for a brief moment that voice inside of her head stopped her. I believe evidence recovered in the form of a diary did show she was seriously conflicted in private as she continued her actions.

Lucy Letby was rushed to trial, a bit like the recent rioters, so I can believe she was convicted on insignificant or circumstantial evidence. I don't think that her not being there for some of the deaths or collapses means it can't have been her, because that means that anything but zero deaths must be suspicious, which is unfortunately not possible.
I'm pretty convinced that was because a lot of people fucked up and they want to get the court case through as quick as possible, shifting as much blame onto Letby as they can to save their asses. People were suspicious of her long before any action was taken. I believe at one point the people who reported her actually had to apologize directly to Letby because of their accusations which the practice was treating as a baseless accusation. Plus it potentially has the risk to expose systemic issues with the NHS that allowed such a thing to occur.

There's people that were negligent to the point that it's basically a criminal offense. And it's likely that the investigation process for when a death occurs is severely lacking, which could potentially cost some very high-up people within the NHS their jobs.

The quicker they can shift all blame onto Letby and get her through the courts, the better for their careers.

Maybe it's because the vending machines in hospitals have very sugary stuff? I remember getting a coffee from one years ago and I swear the thing was 50% sugar by weight, must have been like 600 calories

They were scapegoats at Hillsborough. Scousers (and Leeds) were famous for forcing their way into grounds to beyond capacity.
I disagree they were scapegoats. Senior officers absolutely contributed to the situation and pressured rank and file to lie in their reports. Having said that, I have had the misfortune of sharing our home kop with Leeds supporters. This was when the cages were still up and it was standing only. The same season as Hillsborough. Leeds crashed in from the back and forced us all forwards. First few rows of ours hit the cages, but the back rows of ours turned around and gave the Leeds boys a good kicking so disaster was averted. Must admit I stayed home for the rest of that season, it was a bit too much so soon after Hillsborough.
Leeds still have a nasty traveling contingent, a couple seasons ago they were ripping seats up and throwing them at wheelchair users and the folks in the family seats.

That clip looks to be a few months old. Some of the kids are in school uniform and there's a lot of winter coats.

a) when she wrote "I'm evil, I did this", she meant something other than that she was evil and she did this
People go to pieces when they suddenly find themselves the national villain. Lord knows what was going through her mind - that's not the diary of a rational journalist. You can see from looking at it that it's someone in a really bad state. It's also a common belief amongst many young women that you can act subconsciously. Indeed, people get indoctrinated that it's a thing from things like "Subconscious Bias Training". Entirely possible by that point she was questioning if she did it without realising given she had a nation and officials telling her she did.
b) her defence lawyer was so incompetent that he agreed with the prosecution that there had been a murder, but by someone else
This is the most believable thing of all. We have a CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) that has turned a blind eye to Female Genital Mutilation for years, amongst other criticisms.

It always amused me that thus far the nasty racist misogynist Tories have had three women leaders, a poc leader and two poc chancellors, whereas Labor has had exclusively white male leadership (and Diane Abbot, but I'm not sure what she did apart from bad math and Jeremy Corbin).
The Right tends to promote on merit, the left... not so much. Note, by merit I don't mean virtue but ability. Ambition, smarts, wit, etc. Any woman who displays those on the Left probably ruffles too many feathers for being disagreeable. And for people from other racial groups with ability and ambition - they probably want an environment they can prove themselves and be accepted. Not endlessly be a sop to their assigned identity group. Thatcher - Right Wing, Alice Weidel (lesbian) - Right Wing, that Serbian PM (lesbian) - Right Wing.

On the whole, the Right has a more traditionally Male mindset: You get challenged, you prove yourself, you get accepted. The left has a more traditionally Female mindset (with great apologies to the female Kiwis for generalising) which is: "Promote social harmony, Be Applauded".

I know they're called the lib dems but shortening it feels like such an americanism, I hate it

I've been having the same feelings today reading about the rape gang from devon / cornwall.

So I guess the question to you would be, do you have a Reasonable Doubt? And sounds like you would.

Diet and meal times. Walking around burns calories sure, but in this day and age you can put on the same amount of calories with a few Mars bars. Shift work and lack of proper meal times can absolutely fuck maintaining good diet. You can find plenty of fat builders too and that's back breaking work. Because you're out all day working and burning calories, for lunch you get a white bread sandwich from the shop because nobody packs you a lunch anymore and in the evening you get home famished and eat a huge meal and then sleep. You want thinner nurses? Train more of them so you get more regular hours.

Leeds used to be a great city and a cracking night out.
The road out of it is easy to find unless you're retarded; it has two main A roads and a motorway leading away from it.
Leeds are a cracking club, let down by vultures and fag referees. Champo winners this year.
The only 'locals' that hate their own fans are plastic man u supporters.

Cry moar faggots. Ex-Best City in the country (it used to be until the fucking southerners flooded up and 'gentrified' it. Wankers)

'Ants are everywhere': Labour MP's tenants reveal condition of flats (archive)

A Labour MP rents out flats with black mould and ant infestations, the BBC has discovered.

Jas Athwal, the newly-elected MP for Ilford South, owns 15 rental flats, making him the biggest landlord in the House of Commons.

In one block of seven flats owned by Mr Athwal nearly half the tenants said they had to regularly clean their bathroom ceilings to remove mould.

The BBC also saw evidence of ant infestations in a number of the seven properties.

"The ants are everywhere," one resident said, pointing to insects climbing up a door frame. "They are on my kid’s body and on their clothes."

Another resident said they had been threatened with eviction by the letting agent if they complained about problems in their flat or started claiming benefits.

Mr Athwal said the properties were managed by an agency, he had not been aware of these problems, and denied any tenant had been threatened with eviction.

He said he did not take on tenants on housing benefit to avoid conflicts of interest with his role as the local council leader.

He described himself as a "renters’ champion".

In 2018 Mr Athwal, who led Redbridge Council from 2014 until he became an MP last month, shared an article about a local landlord being fined by the council, writing, external: "Rogue landlords, we are coming for you."

But Andrew Boff, a Conservative member of the London Assembly who has also visited the flats, is calling on the Labour Party and Redbridge Council to investigate.

According to the Redbridge Council website Mr Athwal requires a selective property licence in order to rent out the block of seven properties, a system he introduced in December as the leader of the council.

A search on the council’s public licence register indicates that none of the seven properties has a licence. The BBC has separately seen evidence suggesting that one of the seven properties does not have a licence.

We have also asked Redbridge Council to confirm this information. They had not responded at the time of publication.

Mr Athwal stood down from his role as council leader last month after being elected to Parliament. He said he is in "full compliance" with the landlord licensing scheme.

When I visited the properties, which are above an empty shop in Ilford, the communal areas were dirty and the lights did not work.

Fire alarms were hanging loose from the ceiling, and a washing machine had been dumped next to a set of stairs.

One resident showed me black mould growing on their bathroom ceiling, adding that a family member is a "clean freak" who keeps scrubbing the area with bleach to keep the mould at bay.

Another said they had googled black mould and realised it could be toxic.

"The whole ceiling would be black if we didn’t clean it every few weeks," they said.

I knocked on every door and spoke to most of the tenants. None wanted their name to be used. Some specifically said this was due to a fear of being evicted.

"Please don’t use my name," said a resident. "Finding a new flat is very difficult."

Most of the people I spoke to said Mr Athwal and his property manager were slow to respond to complaints or were completely unresponsive.

While I was at the block, the property manager was tipped off about my visit and tenants started to get calls from him. After receiving these calls they became hesitant about talking to me. This appeared to me to be intimidation.

One resident who had spoken on camera about problems with their flat later asked that we not use the interview and another asked me not to use images of the mould two days after allowing me to take pictures of it.

Labour’s 2024 general election manifesto included a commitment to "prevent private renters being exploited and discriminated against".

"I’m deeply concerned," said Conservative Andrew Boff, who has also visited the flats, spoken to residents and took pictures of the mould.

"I worry that there are people who are Jas Athwal’s tenants who are now frightened to speak for fear of being evicted."

"We’ve heard this time and time again about how the threat of eviction is used to excuse poor maintenance of properties," he added.

He has called for the Labour Party and Redbridge Council to investigate Mr Athwal.

"Here we have a situation where somebody who is the leader of Redbridge Council, which introduced a licensing scheme, which he told everybody else to sign up to, and he didn't do it himself," he said.

Mr Athwal did not respond to a request for interview but said in a statement: "My properties are managed by an agency, selected for their quick response times and excellent customer service. This is evidenced by the long tenure of the tenants – over 87 years across 15 properties.

"I pride myself on being a good landlord and no tenants have ever been evicted. Repairs and improvements have been made to properties as recently as two weeks ago.

"To ensure tenants enjoy a secure, long-term home, rents are kept below market rate and, in many cases rents are frozen at the rate first agreed.

"Every Redbridge rental property I own is in full compliance with the landlord licence scheme, and have been since its creation. Landlords are contacted by the council when licences are due for renewal, this has not yet occurred for my properties but licences will be renewed when the notices are issued."

Around 60 current MPs receive income from rental properties, according to Parliament's latest register of interests.

It has the Royal Armouries, and it's not Bradford
A few years ago I was in Bongland and I went to the Royal Armouries hoping to catch a peek of the Luty, but alas while they have one in their collection, they didn't have it on display. Still overall a pretty neat museum though.

Yeah, the Luty is in the National Firearms Centre collection, they probably don't want to display it to keep from other people getting ideas. I've heard from someone who has handled it that it feels about as you would expect in the hand.
