A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

That sound crazy. A government-employed official charged with protecting the public conspiring with the other government officials to destroy an innocent person's life to cover up the innocents killed by the malice and incompetence at another government institution? When has that kind of thing ever happened?
Gawd bless the NHS.

Kier's getting pushback from unnamed "loyal" MPs over the winter fuel payments cut. Lib Dems are demanding a vote on it, which the government might lose if it's allowed. This is rolling on faster than I would have expected.
Hey what did I say. The problem Labour has its been co-opted by these idealogues like Starmer and Reeves and a large faction don't believe them at all. The issue too is like I said he does not have a "majority" he got the most yes, but publicly and politically he does not. If Reform were not in then the Tories would have won. He does not have the House like Boris does in 2019/20 where he got in with strong seats and a huge back bench. He is speedrunning because he knows he has to whilst the Tories are leaderless and no Parliament is in session.

I agree with Sargon when he says Starmer is not intelligent because he isn't. He is incredibly impulsive and thinks centralizing everything around him will protect him but it wont. It's interesting the Dems are speaking up but it adds to my prediction that Starmer will face a coalition opposition because we all know how horrid his plans for the country are.

The Government fund a 5p a litre fuel duty reduction, which was introduced after Covid to help the public out.
Just to explain to non Brits, the government puts a tax on petrol and diesel. Right now it’s something like 57p a litre.
So tax alone (not the full amount of what you pay, just the tax component ) is almost three dollars a gallon for fuel.
then we pay more on top of that of course,

They were scapegoats at Hillsborough. Scousers (and Leeds) were famous for forcing their way into grounds to beyond capacity.
A direct relative had broken ribs from one incident way before Hillsborough.

I don’t know how they can post something like that and have someone go ‘we should stop posting that kind of stuff, it makes us look stupid’
If anyone did, the rest of the thickos would have taken him out behind a shed and beaten him senseless for the crime of having too many brain cells.

Meanwhile rapists and knifers get their charges dropped for simply saying they are sorry.

The accelerationist in me is seeing all this shit and I'm incredibly interested to see where we are in a couple years time. Especially given how Starmer has decided to govern with an iron fist.

I've seen some think we'd have some kinda civil war. I don't think there's that degree of cohesion yet, but I can definitely see something of that scale but much more disorganised.

If the anti-immigration side begins to group up more though, then it's quite possible.

I know they're called the lib dems but shortening it feels like such an americanism, I hate it

I've been having the same feelings today reading about the rape gang from devon / cornwall.

Lucy Letby was rushed to trial, a bit like the recent rioters, so I can believe she was convicted on insignificant or circumstantial evidence. I don't think that her not being there for some of the deaths or collapses means it can't have been her, because that means that anything but zero deaths must be suspicious, which is unfortunately not possible.

Also, the idea that she was in killing mode 24/7, serial killers aren't, they have gaps, and on overtime shifts she was likely to be even busier than usual and unlikely to attempt anything. And, if you read about other nurse / angel of death cases they often start by poisoning people to save them so they can feel like a hero; then one dies and they realise they can feel just as powerful through murder. So it's totally possible she could alternate saving and killing depending on what oportunities were available and whether she wanted to be seen as a hero in front of certain people; there was discussion early on that she did a lot of it to get the attention of one of the doctors there that she was trying to get into a relationship with. I don't think this is a smoking gun that she's innocent.

If there is any doubt in the letby case there needs to be a review. I’m not convinced she’s innocent but it’s too important to let slide - it has to be done properly.
