A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

While I concur that nursing and teaching in some areas are "well paid", that is with seniority or diversification of skills. A grad nurse after tax and not applying council tax and bills gets about 18k and a grad teacher is somewhat the same and what is worse with teaching especially at school and college level you are forced part time since their budgets are abysmal. I am not going to lie though being a nurse is cushy to an extent I work 3 days a week 12 hours and clock out and the odd extra shift, it's perfect whilst doing a doctorate.

I will say I have not worked with the type of nurses that you spoke of though but I am at a very good university and I have been very impressed with how apolitical the staff were. I said teachers and nurses because they for me are the perfect area for me to describe lower middle class (grad level). Teaching though is a trap its notorious to pivot from as you are judged as a coward for leaving the profession (its very toxic) and honestly I need to apologise because I am in that field I was being myopic.

Interested candidates from Nigeria are sought for positions including musicians, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Royal Engineers Technicians, tradesmen, and paratroopers.

The British Army advises applicants to quit smoking and maintain a balanced diet in preparation.


Successful candidates will need to travel to the UK for further assessment in October and November 2024. Basic training is scheduled to commence between January and March 2025.

Erm. Think you got that the wrong way around. For prices to be rising, demand has to be outstripping supply, ceteris paribus.
As with virtually everything, if resources are finite ( or not increasing much, as with housing stock ) and population is rising ( via immigration or birth rates or death rates ) there is less to go around.

Wage isn't just about how much you work, but about how much your labour is worth given your specific skillset or knowledge. I'm not all that surprised if a nurse earns more than a chef, waiter and bartender. You can turn a compitent person into a chef, waiter or bartender with training and easing them into the role.

Nursing depends tho. Changing a bedpan and reading patient notes and not fucking up medication isn't the "high-value skillset" you might expect. But if you're doing emergency response working right next to paramedics, then you can see why the pay would be justified. You've gotta know how to monitor a whole load of aspects of a person so they don't just fucking die in front of you. That's the kinda skillset where the wage is justified just based on the fact you're paying a constant price to access that expertise.

There probably is an issue with conflation though where an emergency nurse and a nurse that just deals with old people shitting their pants kinda bundle themselves together when realistically the skill gap is massive.

It's like bundling together a primary school teacher reading from the syllabus to a PhD theoretical physicist lecturer who is teaching science so new that we didn't even know it existed 2 years ago.
