A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

'Tech tycoon' Mike Lynch is among the missing after a luxury yacht was sunk during a storm off the coast of Sicily.

You might remember him as the guy who founded Autonomy and sold it to Hewlett Packard at an eye-watering price. HP then decided it was worth a fraction of what they'd paid and engaged in a legal battle which eventually resulted in Lynch being extradited to the US to face charges. He was recently acquitted, but HP were still pursuing him through the civil courts for a very large amount of money.

Absolutely not, Kier has too many mounting pressures;
The % he secured victory with is so monumentally low, its the lowest in history. In order to survive you need a decisive victory but Starmer only won because so many people did not vote and Reform votes, that ate 6 million from the conservatives.
His own party despise him but used him for victory, they could not risk a cous before the election because it would give the small voter base whiplash, instead he culled members like Diane Abbot who openly dislike him. Diane is a bit stupid but compared to the current cabinet of psychopaths. They will do it the sneaky way and drip feed votes of no confidence and find a successor. This will 100% be Angela as they cannot back an unknown but a "worthy" successor.
An overstretched party, the MPs elected have no strong voter base and will flip accordingly to save their positions because there are so many that means more votes of no confidence.
Reform is going to be a royal pain for Labour as Farage is the strongest he has been influentially with the swaths of notable Conservatives defecting it will galvanize the party further but make Farage his lead opposition.

Starmer will have a similar fate to Thatcher and Johnson, when the chickens come home, it will happen. There are of course external factors facing him too. Internationally he is a joke with Americans taking the piss and if Trump wins he will drop him and the other powers will follow his lead. It's one of Trumps tried and tested power moves and the UK are in for it this time. As for economically we are not in a strong position and with Rachel Reeves USING private investor money to build houses and not using the government interest we are royally fucked.

I predict what will happen though is the oppositions picking apart cabinet members probably Reeves making her resign and destroying his circle of influence, then Raynor will come in and offer alternatives.

And look at that, Mike Lynch's co-defendant was fatally struck by a car this weekend.

pretty much, so fellow Brit/ros how long do you think Starmer will last?

I think Angela is doing a coup come Christmas.
It doesn’t make any difference. If angela coups him she will be just as bad. And whoever gets to coup her will be just as bad as well.
Also a chairman of Morgan Stanley international missing. There’s a thread on it in here as well, that is very peculiar isn’t it?

They had fourteen years and most of the problems Blair faced were created by Thatcher in the first place
I'm not supporting or excusing either. Both parties blame the previous party while doing nothing to fix the situation. Then the NPC's go out and vote based on "the tories screwed us, vote labour" or "Labour spent all the money, vote tory". Nothing changes.

It's all so tiresome.

What Blair inherited from the Tories was a dying industrial base, collapsing infrastructure, massive government debt, a shortage of practically skilled workers, and a population spike caused by immigration. His response to this was to massively increase immigration, spend even more government money on things that didn't resolve the infrastructure problems, divert the workforce into pointless university courses, and regulate much of the remaining industry out of existence. He then followed up by creating what was, at the time, the most intrusive police state the country had ever seen, and signed us up to a prolonged military conflict while cutting the size of the military. Blair cannot be given even the slightest benefit of the doubt when it comes to just how shit this country has become.

I watched an early season episode of Mock the Week the other day from 2002. One of the headlines they were mocking was "84,500 prison spaces full, only 500 left".
Weird, init, that 20 years later, when crime rates are through the roof and population has exploded, that we're still at the same breaking point.
No new prisons were built, nothing was done to tackle crime. Yet here we are, still at that 85,000 number.

Releasing 5000 criminals to house 500 is math only Dianne Abbot could have done.
I wonder how many of the Rotherham 14(00) will be released?

Don't forget devolution, the Human Rights Act, and the Gender Recognition Act.

The Telegraph posted a news story picked up by Reclaim the net .

Labour are planning to add "Detecting misinformation" to early school classes. So basically they want children to only listen to their propaganda and ignore their lying eyes.

Bridget Phillipson, the UK’s Secretary of Education and Labour MP for Houghton and Sunderland South, has unveiled plans for a comprehensive review of the primary and secondary education curriculum. The proposed changes aim to equip students with the state-backed skills to discern truth from falsehood in the always-online era but have sparked concerns regarding potential indoctrination and the limiting of critical thinking.

Phillipson’s initiative, discussed in a recent interview with The Sunday Telegraph, seeks to fortify students against what she describes as a surge of false narratives and extremist ideologies online. The revised curriculum will emphasize critical thinking across various subjects, including English and Computer lessons, which will now incorporate analyses of news articles and online content to identify “misinformation.”

Phillipson told the Sunday Telegraph: “It’s more important than ever that we give young people the knowledge and skills to be able to challenge what they see online.
“That’s why our curriculum review will develop plans to embed critical skills in lessons to arm our children against the disinformation, fake news and putrid conspiracy theories awash on social media. Our renewed curriculum will always put high and rising standards in core subjects – that’s non-negotiable.
“But alongside this we will create a broad, knowledge-rich curriculum that widens access to cultural subjects and gives pupils the knowledge and skills they need to thrive at work and throughout life.”
However, the focus on distinguishing “genuine” news from fabricated stories could bias students towards mainstream media sources, discouraging skepticism about these outlets and potentially stifling broader critical inquiry.

As in other scenarios, critics fear that such an approach could reduce exposure to a diverse range of viewpoints, skewing students’ understanding of media literacy by promoting a narrow spectrum of sources deemed acceptable by the curriculum standards.
The push to integrate lessons on fake news within computer classes and the contextual analysis of statistics in mathematics has been met with skepticism. There is a concern that defining certain sources as inherently reliable could undermine the development of independent critical thinking skills, leading students to accept approved narratives without sufficient scrutiny.
These curriculum modifications follow incidents like the recent discussion about a stabbing incident where three young children were killed, which ignited riots nationwide. Online posts resulted in arrests.
While the government and specialized units, such as the National Police Chiefs’ Council, intensify their efforts to combat online “hate speech” and misinformation, Phillipson insists that education is the most potent antidote to misleading narratives.

Tin foil hat but I honestly think the government are releasing 5,000 extra Labour voters.

What they don’t seem to get that if those 5,000 have turned their life around and renounced crime 5 will want to become social workers but the rest will be the most conservative ring wingers you’ll ever meet.

What’s more likely is they won’t vote and see this as permission from the government to go on a crime spree as they won’t be sent back to prison because they’re all full.

Very easy win for anyone who wants to have a dig at the government too - out of those 5000 there’s going to be multiple offenders. ‘Violent rapist strikes again after being let out early to let Labour lock up man who looked at riot’ is a free bit of propaganda, and one that will rile people up even more

While it's true it will be propaganda, some little girl's vagina is going to get torn up and she'll have serious mental health problems for life because of it. Having known many women with bad histories like this, it's definitely not worth the propaganda and I don't think it has any real impact any way. If Pakis gang raping children from the school gates didn't work to motivate people I doubt a Somali raping another child will impact much of anything.
