A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I don’t get why the media is wanting us to care about Tenerife guy who went missing. The amount of British and international drug gangs is that operate out of there is insane.

This wouldn’t be the first Brit to “disappear” there. It won’t be the last either.

There's also a weird video doing the rounds from a woman going by "Justified.Hooker69"/Sandra Ntonya who has previously been in the news as a "£140/hour hooker" that the Man City footballer Yaya Touré was cheating on his wife with,
Is that a lot?

I really cannot believe how utterly stupid some people can be.
Pretty certain that one's bait.

I'll interrupt this current trend with some brief news. Some people might have seen Kier claiming that Labour's not going to scrap the gender identity lessons bans in schools. The reason he's saying that is they've said they are and anyone with any sense knows they are.

Labour's education spokesperson Bridget Phillipson has avoided saying whether the party would scrap a proposed ban on schools in England teaching pupils about gender identity.
Earlier this year, the Conservative government published draft guidance which says the concept should not be taught.
Setting out the guidance in May, Education Secretary Gillian Keegan said it would provide teachers with "more clarity".
Speaking on BBC One's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Ms Phillipson said there were "good" principles in the guidance but that "other elements" had "drifted far too much into partisan and unnecessary language".
She also said she was "genuinely sorry to hear" of JK Rowling's doubts about voting Labour.
Writing in the Times,, external the Harry Potter author and former party donor criticised Keir Starmer's stance on women's and trans rights and accused the party of "abandoning women".
Responding to the comments, Ms Phillipson said she had "a real degree of respect" for the writer but argued that her party had a strong record on women's rights.

During her interview, Ms Phillipson was repeatedly asked if a future Labour government would implement draft guidance prohibiting schools from teaching the concept of gender identity.
She said "we absolutely do need to see guidance" adding that it was important to provide "clarity" for teachers on "how to manage what is a sensitive and difficult area for them".
"But let’s make sure that children’s wellbeing is at the heart of this. Let’s stop this being a political football."
She said the government's draft guidance included "unnecessary language that I think makes it harder for schools to navigate this".
"There are trans people; they have a right for their existence to be recognised. Many trans people are vulnerable and are deserving of support."
Ms Keegan has said schools should "not be providing classroom materials that, for example, include the view that gender is a spectrum".
"While protected characteristics such as gender reassignment should be taught about, that must be done on a factual basis at an appropriate age and must not be based on contested ideology."

Labour has faced criticism from some of its own MPs and supporters over its position on transgender rights.
Ms Rowling, who donated £1m to Labour in 2008, wrote in The Times: "As long as Labour remains dismissive and often offensive towards women fighting to retain the rights their foremothers thought were won for all time, I'll struggle to support them.
"For left-leaning women like us this isn't, and never has been, about trans people enjoying the rights of every other citizen and being free to present and identify however they wish.
"This is about the right of women and girls to assert their boundaries."
Under the Equality Act 2010, it is illegal to discriminate against anyone because of "protected characteristics" - a set of identifying traits that are protected by law and include age, disability, religion, race, sex and sexual orientation among others.
Some interpret sex in this context as referring strictly to biological sex, while others believe it also applies to people with a gender recognition certificate; a legal document that allows someone to change the legal sex on their birth certificate.
Earlier this year, the Conservatives pledged to rewrite the Equality Act to apply to biological sex, making it simpler for services such as rape crisis centres to stop biological males from taking part.
Responding to Ms Rowling's comments, Ms Phillipson said: "I want to make sure that women get the support and the justice that they deserve and that we do make sure that we’ve got services that are available for women, around rape and sexual violence.
"There are important provisions already there within the Equality Act that allow for single sex provision and it’s important those are maintained.
"But let’s, alongside that, make sure that trans people too get the support that they need. I don’t believe it’s an either/or but I would say really, do judge us on what we’ve done in the past to support women."
Don't forget some people in Labour want people posting Mumsnet to be arrested for hate speech.

In lighter news.
Postal workers in a rural Cornish town have said they are living in fear after a string of attacks by divebombing seagulls.

The Royal Mail has been forced to apologise to locals in Liskeard for delayed deliveries after the birds were spotted 'sweeping' towards posties from rooftops in the area.

Residents of the market town have been advised to either wait for deliveries to arrive when the seagulls are not as aggressive, or let the Royal Mail know an alternative address that post can be sent to.

The Royal Mail added that the birds seemed to be protecting their young and viewed some people as a possible threat.

One local agreed that the animals were being selective about who they picked on, pointing out that they also targeted council workers.

She told Cornwall Live: 'They don't attack me for some reason, but the posties and any council workers are running for their lives.

'My next-door neighbour who's elderly got swooped and knocked over, but he admits he also throws stuff at them — I always greet them.'

The resident argued that the young seagulls were cute so she was not bothered about her deliveries arriving late, The Times reports.

She joked that she had never received a letter before from the Royal Mail and that the message had made her laugh.

In the Royal Mail's letter, dated June 20, Ryan Lean, customer operations manager for the Liskeard depot, said: 'As you may be aware, we are currently experiencing some difficulties safely delivering to you and your neighbour due to seagulls in the area, swooping at delivering staff in order to protect their young.

'The purpose of this letter is to firstly advise you of the issues we are experiencing but also to assure you that we will continue to attempt deliveries every day.

'I appreciate this is not ideal. Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience this may cause but whilst Royal Mail is committed to providing a consistent daily delivery to addresses, we do place the highest priority on the safety of our employees.

'Rest assured that we will be monitoring the situation on a daily basis with a view to resuming normal service to you and your neighbour as soon as possible.'

This is not the first time that pesky birds have thwarted postal workers.

In 2019, people living on a road in Argyll and Bute did not have their post delivered for weeks after a series of seagull attacks on posties, with one even twisting his ankle as he attempted to escape the mischievous birds in Helensburgh.

David McArthur, a local, said that postal workers had largely been able to avoid injury by 'staying in their van and beeping the horn for us to run out and get the post'.

Two years earlier, a street in Hereford was compared to a scene from Alfred Hitchcock's classic horror movie The Birds when the animals began dive-bombing passersby.

One postman even reported that a bird had flown straight into his head.

The chaos in Liskeard comes after the Royal Mail failed to meet its delivery targets for first and second-class deliveries for the 2022/23 financial year, resulting in a £5.6million issued by Ofcom last November.

The regulator can consider any evidence of any exceptional circumstances which might explain failed targets.
Guess the gulls watched Mr Bates vs the Post Office?

If anyone is wondering who is standing in their constituency, you can find out at:

Not only does it say who is standing, it also says where they have stood previously and for what party. For example, I found out that the "independent" candidate in my constituency has stood as a Conservative in the last 3 Council elections - he does not mention this anywhere in his election material or on his online presence. Sneaky fucker.
>check candidate I'm interested in voting for
>all they're saying about their background is true
>background has the loathing of a peasant

Haha nice. Guess I'm definitely voting this time around then.

First time I've seen this guys face and you can tell he's scummy. He has a dodgy look to him like the kids in school without a Dad who always smash up the local playground.
He looks like half our apprentices. Gormless but hopefully through bullshiting.

Look, can you expect journalists to pay for their own holidays? Ever since Maddy they've realised that a good missing kid story means weeks "researching" somewhere warm in a 5-star hotel on expenses. Best of all, if the kid is obviously dead, they can stay there indefinitely!

I think it was Null who said "However much you hate journalists, it isn't enough."

Also noted how quick Lancashire police jumped in to fly over and offer their help.

Wonder how many officers volunteered
to go to Tenerife to look for him for a couple of weeks?

Death in Paradise is up to 13 series. Even the most idiotic person knows why and can try to take advantage of the same opportunity.

To be fair if you spent your working week trying to keep a lid on a third of the country's cross-Pennine Pakistani colonial enclaves you'd probably fancy a kick back in the sun too. They probably invited GMP and WYP to help investigate the mysterious dearth of grooming going on in Tenerife.

So two Tory candidates have been suspended for betting on the date of the election, one is being investigated after claiming he won two grand doing so, then backtracking and claiming it was all a prank bro, and now a Labour candidate has been suspended for betting on the Tory candidate to beat him in his constituency. Fucks sake politicians. Anyone else remember when they at least pretended to keep the grafting hidden?

The labour one made me laugh, here the story for anyone who wants to read it
A former Labour parliamentary candidate has said he made a "stupid error" in betting he would lose his bid to become an MP.

Labour suspended Kevin Craig as its candidate for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich after learning the Gambling Commission had launched an investigation into him.

The seat was won by Conservative candidate Dan Poulter in 2019 with a majority of just over 20,000. Mr Poulter later defected to Labour.

In a statement on social media, Mr Craig said he "did not place this bet with any prior knowledge of the outcome" and had planned on "giving any winnings to local charities".

"This was a huge mistake, for which I apologise unreservedly," he said.

"I have so much respect for how Keir Starmer has changed the Labour Party and I have been fighting so hard to win this seat and change the country alongside him.

"However, it is right that the party upholds the highest standards for its Parliamentary candidates - just as the public expects the highest standards from any party hoping to serve in government."

The Labour Party has also returned a £100,000 donation made by Mr Craig in May 2023. A prolific donor, Mr Craig has given Labour £196,600 since 2005.

A Labour spokeswoman said: "With Keir Starmer as leader, the Labour party upholds the highest standards for our parliamentary candidates, as the public rightly expects from any party hoping to serve, which is why we have acted immediately in this case."

It comes as the Conservative party withdrew support from two candidates under investigation for alleged betting on the date of the general election.

Both Craig Williams, the candidate in Montgomeryshire and Glyndŵr, and Laura Saunders, the candidate in Bristol North West, are being looked into by the Gambling Commission.

Most the posters in this thread have died of heat stroke. RIP
Mmmm, sunlight.

It'll be raining in the North tomorrow, I'm going to get up early, nail all of my work and be out by 5pm ish to stroll to my local for a pint and something to eat in the sun. So rain should kick off around 2pm.

They will do to too. Remember Labour have committed to making ‘hatred’ an aggravated offence so yeah, I’ll see you in the gulag.
No definition of hatred of course. Basically means anything they dislike.
Remember when the hate crime laws assured the electorate that hate would simply be something that made an already existing crime worse and that a crime had to be comported first and that that hate in and of itself wasn’t a thing?
Pepperidge farm remembers.

The warning signs were not exactly subtle.
