A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Keir Starmer up until a few years ago had a plan to deal with the result of the Brexit referendum.

Which was to negotiate a new deal with the EU to stay in the single market. He was then going to have a referundum where the two choices would be either that deal, or to stay in the EU. He would campaign against the deal he had negotiated and to stay in the EU.

This was his actual policy and warmy endorsed by all his neighbours in North London.

If that had happened, the referendum would have been boycotted by huge chunks of the population and there would have been massive civil unrest, the EU probably wouldn't have even wanted the UK to stay.

Here's starmer saying he prefers Davos to Westminster.

Now to paraphrase Dave Chappelle it may not be a stupid thing to think, but it's a stupid thing to say out loud.

Starmer is going to win a massive majority. He's not nearly as smart as people think he is, he had a terrible record in the CPS and he has poor judgement. He thinks he's going to get lots done becuase he's on good terms with the civil service establishment but I don't know.

I think it's very possible he'll doing something really stupid ,and there will be your revolution.

Another thing to bear in mind is that the UK isn't America, we have a tiny army compared to our population, and a Police force that struggle to deal with any sort of widespread civil unrest. We're not like most European countries that for historical reasons have kept civil defence structures in place. I remember the begining of lock down and people starting to shit themselves when toilet role stopped appearing on the shelves. The UK is an extremely fragile country.

I can see things like riots and bloodbaths happening, but I don't think there will be another french revolution or mad max scenario, there will be just lots and lots of small unpleasant happenings somewhere else - like the multitude of deaths at mecca the other day - and you will get on with your life grateful that it's happening somewhere else.

There isn't 'somewhere else' left any more. That's one of the problems. Limited space, free money and an infinite number of brown/blacks breeding. You can drive from any part of this island to another in a day and the government has been using that fact to bus people in any where they can fit.

Also, what civil wars are you thinking of since charles II vs cromwell, 250 years ago? I would agree that the train strikes are / could be economic warfare but it was pretty clear that Mick Lynch was building a head of steam then stepped down and said he would be focus on train unions only because he didn't want to kickstart anything larger, or was warned off doing so.

Hold up! Me an' the family are passing up from the south seeking safety. It's a hellscape down there.
