A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I wouldn't read too much into the turnout figures, they're fairly unremarkable for by-elections.

The Conservatives would have won in Tamworth had all the Reform voters voted Tory instead, and I expect that's really going to spook the Government. Expect a change in policy of some sort, just like they toned down the green stuff after Uxbridge.
Nothing spooks the Tories like fears of losing elections. If they get desperate enough they might even start telling the truth, or at least something that bares a passing resemblance to it.

After several humiliating defeats in by-elections it's nice to see the Tories finally get back to focusing on policies popular with the masses, kicking out the migrants fixing inflation stopping companies gouging the shit out of ordinary people removing the cap on banker bonuses that was brought in after they fucked literally the entire world up:

The cap on bankers' bonuses is being removed as part of a post-Brexit shake-up of UK financial rules, it has been confirmed.
The plan was announced by former chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng last year as a way of making London a more attractive place to do business.
It was one of the few mini-budget policies to remain after most were unwound by Mr Kwarteng's successor.
The cap on bonuses will be lifted from 31 October, the regulator said.
Introduced in 2014 when the UK was part of the EU, the cap was designed to curb excessive risk taking in the financial services industry in the wake of the 2008 financial crash.
The cap limited the variable pay of employees of banks, building societies and investment firms to twice their base pay.
Finance bosses have long complained about the rules, saying they lead to higher base pay that pushes up banks' fixed costs.
Those costs cannot be adjusted in line with the firm's financial performance, they add, making it harder to cut costs during a downturn.
But critics have argued that uncapping bonuses could make the financial system more risky.
There have also been concerns that the move will benefit wealthy people at a time when many households are struggling with the cost of living.
An HM Treasury spokesperson said: "Decisions on remuneration in the banking sector are for the PRA as the independent statutory regulator."
Darren Jones, Labour's shadow chief secretary to the treasury, said the decision "tells you everything you need to know" about the priorities of the government.
"Rishi Sunak is marking his anniversary of becoming Prime Minister by pushing ahead with Liz Truss' plan to axe the cap on bankers' bonuses," he added.
Paul Nowak, general secretary of the TUC, called the decision "obscene".
"City financiers are already enjoying bumper bonuses. They don't need another helping hand from the Conservatives," he said.
"At a time when millions up and down the country are struggling to make ends meet - this is an insult to working people."
The decision to scrap the cap on bankers' bonuses was subject to a consultation by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA).
In a joint statement on Tuesday, the two regulators said the bonus cap had "unintended consequences" with firms ending up increasing bankers' fixed pay.
They added that when fixed or base pay accounted for the biggest share of remuneration, employers had less room to vary employee pay due to "material poor performance or misconduct".
The plan to remove a cap on bankers' bonuses was unveiled in the mini-budget in September 2022, under the then-Prime Minister Liz Truss and her Chancellor, Mr Kwarteng.
However, the package of measures in the mini-budget sparked turmoil on the financial markets and Mr Kwarteng was sacked shortly afterwards.
Most measures were reversed by the new Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt. However, the plan to scrap the bankers' bonus cap was one of the few mini-budget policies to remain.

They've got to do it for the sake of national security! Can't have our retired civil servants and former MPs taking seats on the boards if foreign banks, can we?

Another victory for common sense! Trebles all round!

I mean, why were you expecting them to do the things their base wants when it’s the Tories fault those problems exsist in the way they do in thr first place?

Anyone else got flooding? We are up a hill luckily but around us is all a bit soggy
Socially Right-Wing and economically Left-Wing is such a potent combination that it's literally been made illegal in most Western countries.
Amazing isnt it? What people actually want is never even on offer. Labour are pro Troon and the tories need to really push that. Not like I even like the current Tory crop but ffs let’s not have labour in again.

Are you underestimating Keir Starmer's ability to pull defeat out of the jaws of victory? I fully expect a hung parliament with LibDems doing what they do best, next go-around.

I hope so. I dont want that spineless git and his Troon enabling commies in power. Id prefer some real conservatives tbh but good luck with that.

At this rate, the social democrats might actually have a chance of getting a few seats.

Anyone else got flooding?
Not so far, popping up to the Lake District tomorrow though so need to check the roads online in the morning.

I've said it before, they're getting in and if you cling to hope it's going to be worse for you when it happens.
I'm mostly wondering what they're going to do to make things worse when they're in. I think that online safety bill might be where they start, it's massively open for abuse and they have never seen totalitarian tools they've not willing to make worse.

London jihad demo leader is NHS doctor: Islamic extremist's double life as a suburban GP is exposed

Archive
The firebrand leader of an extremist Islamic group that called for 'jihad' at an anti-Israel protest works as an NHS GP under a different name, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.

As head of Hizb ut-Tahrir in the UK, Abdul Wahid celebrated the barbaric Hamas terror attacks that slaughtered 1,400 Jewish men, women and children earlier this month as a 'very welcome punch on the nose' to Israel.

But he has also spent more than 20 years practising as a family doctor under his real name, Dr Wahid Asif Shaida.

Last night his shocked patients in the London suburb of Harrow said they had no idea about the double life of their well-spoken, privately educated GP.

Hizb ut-Tahrir caused outrage last weekend when members chanted 'jihad' during a rally outside the Egyptian and Turkish embassies in London and called for 'Muslim armies' to attack Israel.

Wahid told the baying crowd: 'Victory is coming and everyone has to choose a side. Whose side are you going to be on?'

Another senior member of Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT) – a group banned in Germany and a dozen other nations – asked supporters: 'What is the solution to liberate people in the concentration camp called Palestine?'

They chanted back: 'Jihad! Jihad! Jihad!'

Home Secretary Suella Braverman criticised the police for not arresting the men. But Met chief Sir Mark Rowley insisted no crime had been committed as 'jihad' had meanings other than calling for holy war.

After the protest, Wahid was back at work at Welbeck Road Surgery, a short stroll from his £850,000 semi-detached home, where he has practised since 2002. He has a senior role at the surgery as a mentor and trainer for recently-qualified doctors, according to its website.

But some patients told the MoS his leadership of Hizb ut-Tahrir in Britain called into question whether he was capable of fairly treating Jewish, female or gay patients.

Our revelations come as the Israel-Hamas war intensifies. Yesterday:

Israel pounded Gaza with air strikes and artillery fire as tanks and troops rolled into the besieged enclave;

Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised address that Israeli troops had entered the 'evil stronghold' of Hamas and vowed to bring home the 229 hostages taken on October 7, but warned: 'This will be a long war';

Israel Defence Forces said strikes had taken out two senior Hamas commanders, including an air chief who masterminded the use of armed paragliders in the attacks;

UK diplomats held urgent talks with Qatari counterparts – who have been acting as a conduit between Hamas and the West – to try to secure the release of the seven British hostages, and the evacuation of 200 Britons from under-siege Gaza;

Thousands of pro-Palestine protesters marched on the streets of Britain for the third weekend running, with many again carrying offensive and anti-Semitic placards, chanting anti-Jewish slogans and some holding baby dolls covered in fake blood;

Labour leader Keir Starmer faced a revolt from up to half of his MPs who demanded he join their calls for a ceasefire.

After Hamas gunmen carried out their murderous attacks earlier this month, the Facebook page of Wahid's HT group hailed the atrocity as having 'ignited a wave of joy and elation among Muslims globally'.

Days later, Wahid gave a talk on YouTube, praising the 'brave mujahideen', or jihad fighters, who 'gave the enemy a punch on the nose, and it's a very welcome punch on the nose'.

The Government has faced repeated calls to ban HT, which wants the whole Islamic world to unite under one leader, and for Britain to fall under the rule of that 'caliph'. Wahid has been the leader of the UK group for at least 17 years, but has, until now, managed to keep his NHS career hidden.

Last week our reporters tracked him to a house in Harrow where we established that he was really called Dr Shaida.

He qualified as a doctor in 1991 after studying in London. Before that he was educated at Merchant Taylors' School in Northwood, near Harrow, where fees are now £25,000 a year and whose old boys include comedian Michael McIntyre, and Clive of India.

Last night, Dr Shaida confirmed he was also known as Abdul Wahid but denied his HT group was 'extremist', saying the word does not have an agreed meaning and is used as a 'pejorative term.' He added: 'I attend to my professional duties and commitments diligently, aiming for the best care of my patients at all times. For reasons of professional probity I keep a very clear line between my professional and political life.'

He said his group was calling on the Muslim world to intervene militarily to rescue the people of Gaza 'who have been subjected to horrific conditions for 16 years'.

However, patients leaving his North West London surgery were shocked to hear their GP was the leader of a hardline Islamist group. Tony Ryan, 80, a retired rail worker, said: 'That's scandalous, a man of his position should know better. The surgery should have a word with him, and if he does not stop, they should part ways.'

A security source also questioned if Wahid would follow his legal duty as a GP to report patients with signs of extremism to the Prevent anti-terror scheme, saying: 'What guarantee is there he will refer extremists when he himself is one?'

Professor Anthony Glees, a terrorism expert, added: 'A GP who glorifies Islamic extremism like this not only puts his patients at risk, but is a risk to national security.'

Labour MP Khalid Mahmood, added that Wahid needed to declare his HT role to patients 'and let them make a choice on whether they want to see him'.

The General Medical Council, which has the power to strike doctors from the register, said in a statement: 'We cannot confirm whether we are investigating a doctor unless they have been interim suspended or have interim conditions following a hearing at the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service.

'When a serious concern is raised, we investigate to determine whether patient safety, or the public’s confidence in the medical profession, is at risk.'

Experts believe HT, which does not recognise the UK's legal system, has several thousand members. Ex-members have said it behaves like a 'cult', a claim repeated in Parliament.

Articles like this and catching the lawyers telling migrants to lie about why they were entering the country justify the Mail's existence and no amount of shit from them will convince me differently.

And of course the Labour MP is calling for patients to choose not to see him rather than the NHS to fire his ass.
Looks like this is the surgery.

Currently has 13 medical staff per that.

I have a sneaking suspicion he's not the only one there with a pro-Palestine attitude in this surgery.

UK: Girl Suspended From School After Refusing To Use Unisex Facilities, Calling Parents For Help

Archive
A teen girl was suspended from her school in Gosport, United Kingdom, following her refusal to use a gender neutral bathroom and contacting a parent for help. The girl, who attends the Brune Park Community School, told her father she was given the option of either using the unisex facility, or not being allowed to go to the bathroom at all.

Speaking to the News, the father of the girl, who has not been named, reported that his daughter received a 1-day suspension on October 11 in an incident that began with her refusing to use the mixed-sex lavatory.

“A male teacher at my daughter’s school refused her access to a female toilet, giving her an ultimatum to use a unisex toilet or not to go at all,” the father said, outraged. “To add to the problem, my daughter was subsequently suspended because she contacted me to tell me what was going on and refused to hand over her phone.”

The girl had reportedly told her teacher that she felt unsafe using the unisex washroom, and that she had concerns about its hygienic upkeep. While the exact age of the girl is not known, Bune Park’s student body ranges from 11 to 16 years old.

“My daughter now has a suspension on her school record for stating she wanted to use a female toilet because the unisex ones make her feel unsafe and dirty, without so much as a question asked of this teacher,” her father said, adding that while the unisex washrooms are “always open,” the single-sex options are sometimes closed off to students for unknown reasons.

The father said there had never been any issues before with his daughter using female toilets, adding: “I’ve spoken to a lot of other parents who aren’t even aware of the unisex toilets being introduced, let alone male teachers having control over what toilets their sons and daughters can use.

“If a girl wants to use a female toilet she should be able to – especially at a sensitive age when they are going through changes. The same applies for boys, some might be too shy to use a unisex toilet … There is absolutely no excuse in today’s world for a male teacher trained in safeguarding children to refuse a young girl access to a female toilet. There has been no repercussions for the teacher whatsoever, so they can do this again.”

The school declined to comment, instead sending a letter justifying the suspension to the child’s parent.

“The decision to suspend (the child) has not been taken lightly. (She) has been suspended for this fixed period because on October 11 (she) was persistently defiant,” they told the girl’s father.

Issues concerning the introduction of unisex toilets in schools have been persistent over the past year, with many reporting incidents at schools across the United Kingdom.

Earlier this year, a mother in Coventry reported that her 13-year-old daughter had been assaulted in the mixed-sex washrooms at the Caludon Castle School in Wyken.

The mother explained that a teenage boy had kicked the cubicle door open to take photographs of her daughter while she was using the toilet. He kicked the door so hard that it hit the teen in the face, leaving her with marks on her arm and a large cut on her forehead.

The girl had to be taken to hospital after being attacked while using the facilities.

“The decision to suspend (the child) has not been taken lightly. (She) has been suspended for this fixed period because on October 11 (she) was persistently defiant,” they told the girl’s father.
"She" is in brackets - was this changed from "he" in the original? Is this a daughter or a "daughter"?
