A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

It's not unexpected. For all she claimed to be an outsider, she's part of the same circle in the end. The one bright side is that she's just dense enough that she might still do something right by accident.
If she menage to do something right by accident, it'll be a miracle.

That's my baseless fantasy and I'm holding on to it as tight as I can.
I'm presuming they need the woman and black shield for the absolute shit they are in atm and some of the steps they might need to do to get out of it. Better than having that curry eater who is too close to Boris in. If he's a 1/100, she's a 2.

Not having any hope they will do the things required to get prices down.

Patel has just resigned as Home Secretary. I guess she decided to quit instead of being sacked the next day.

I occasionally check Tattle for the latest news on her and they have a wiki for her too. They're not as good with archiving as KF and I've toyed with the idea of creating a thread here for her because she's constantly making a fool of herself and ebegging on Twitter despite being born and raised solidly middle class, but the thought of having to wade through her history just makes me want to take a nap.
She stormed off twitter and deleted her account because someone slagged off her mothers roast potatoes...

I’ve been so distracted by the Keffals v Kiwis arc I’d completely forgotten about her!

Just started typing her name into Twitter and…

Lol.

Sounds like people finally had enough of her not delivering on her Patreon too.

She’ll be back.

Jack Monroe can't cook and is the last person who should have had dozens of books published of apparently healthy affordable meals. She hates poor people, hates vegetables, fresh food etc., is a "vegan" who eats the cheapest sausage meat money can buy. Seems either not to know or to care about nutrition at all.

On the plus side, she's got (had?) one of the most histrionic, melodramatic twitter accounts I've ever witnessed.

Before flouncing off this time, she screamed at that Tom 'your potatoes look dire' bloke that "MY MOTHER IS DISABLED" + a few other messages about how she'll always protect her family against violence or whatever. Someone on twitter collected her followers' replies to his tweet and, I kid you not, there are well over 100 people baying for his fucking blood. Keffals might have more Twitter clout, but Jack Monroe wins hands down when it comes to mentally deranged sycophantic followers.

She'd be a good candidate for a thread now if she ever returns to Twitter. Her mainstream avenues are shrivelling now that too many people have cottoned onto her poverty racket. And she's going absolutely mental. Posting every 5-10 minutes some days, going from "I'M LIVING MY BEST LIFE" to "I'M SUICIDAL 'CAUSE OF TWITTER" in a matter of hours it seems. Absolutely hilarious.

This UK shit is funny beyond belief. killing the UK economy, business, public services and tanking the pound all so your friends who got you in power can have so more money they won't spend.

When the IMF comes out and tells you to pack it in because shit is too crazy, and you don't listen.

And blocking OBR from releasing the forecats with the mini-budget because you know it will show how bad it really is.

Only people who are happy about outside those getting richer, is Labour who will win the next election pretty easily.

Mean this is something you expect from some 3rd world shit hole not a 1st world country. And it seems UK population is just going to take it without even protesting.

Oh no we're not going to have to pay as much tax, the horror. How could they do this, they should have put it up to 40% across the board and tax anyone who's even remotely comfy another 50% on top. We gotta brain drain the country to death for the good of the work shy - the media, WEF, and pearl clutchers.

Look at the currency markets and you'll see the same graph for everyone except the dollar. It's highly unlikely that, out of all of them, only the UK uniquely suffered this drop because of local issues.

vs the USD:

I think the budget has some good ideas and some very bad ones. Something needs to pull currency out of the system and also reduce price pressure. I would have instituted a sales tax on luxury goods (as opposed to the VAT nonsense), increased corporation tax a little, and reduced fuel tax by some arbitrary amount that I haven't worked out yet. Income taxes are the devil.

e: also cut tax on electricity and gas consumption and increase it on gas and fuel exports.

It also dropped against the euro, so while the strong dollar has something to do with it but if it was only that you wouldn't have seen the drop against the euro as well.
