A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Germany has a private insurance backed system that works better that our one.
Exactly, this NHS myth that every party has to back or else there's outrage is stupid. The quality of care is at a race to the bottom, and for the sake of what? Insurance is the future of healthcare in this country, with heavy subsidies for the less fortunate. We're obsessed like it's some achievement to have a shitty bloated public sector.

The rest of Europe manages just fine. We're literally just giving free daycare for retards who don't need it and free healthcare to rando immigrants, poor people get subsidised dentalcare so why not healthcare too?

Reform hasn't even said anything either. Surely Labour's plan won't affect council taxes to cope with millions of people who contribute nothing 🙄

As it stands, Reform will gain majorities on 3 councils - they have now won a majority in Staffordshire, they are about to cross the winning line in Lincolnshire, and the early results in Durham match what was expected and should lead to a Reform majority there.

EDIT: I will add a fourth - Reform stand on 25 in Nottinghamshire with 15 to declare - 29 is a majority.

Exactly and paying for treatment should be easy - NI payments should equate to NHS treatment.

We all know it's coming and is the future, but the MSM wish to use it as some sort of 'bogeyman' argument - 'if you don't save the NHS there's no future for us all, waah!'

There's only so many times people will believe them crying wolf.

A very interesting take from Scotland:

Doubling down on Reform could be Labour's biggest mistake

Can you afford good dental care?

Can you afford good healthcare?

Yes.
Why can't you?

I've made the right decisions in life and have earned the right to jump the 1.5 - 5 year waiting lists with my hard-earned, crisp notes. I pay £80 so I don't have to wait for years in a queue as an abscess in a molar gives me sepsis.

I would go into debt if it meant I could pay for high-quality, efficient healthcare. Your body is finite and the longer an issue goes unfixed it becomes chronic. Can't afford to pay for it? You either don't care about your body or you are too dumb to make/save money.

Otherwise, please take a number, go to the back of the queue and wait patiently. Dr. Vivek Masabahagonpunjab will see you in approximately seventeen years.

You're right, I'm just a silly, stupid, faggot and I need to let the real, big, strong men take charge.
Careful, Guntstress! Your fantasies are showing.

Looks like at least one Labour MP understands that things are going badly for the party:

'It’s not just Labour’s loss in Runcorn that is worrying some of the party’s MPs.

It is that, on the limited results so far, the party seems to be under-performing relative to poor local election results in 2021.

Labour has lost ground in Northumberland and failed to capitalise on Conservative unpopularity in Staffordshire.

So far, most of the critics who are speaking on the record are on Labour’s left.

Richard Burgon – a shadow minister under Jeremy Corbyn – says: "The Labour leadership must urgently change course. It should start by ditching the plans to cut disability benefits and increase taxes on the wealthiest instead."

The co-chair of the left-wing group Momentum, Sasha Das Gupta, urges more MPs and councillors to speak out against the leadership’s direction, and says that "continuing austerity and failing to offer real change risks handing the country to the likes of Nigel Farage".

Speaking off the record to some MPs from across the party, they seem to agree that the main issues raised with them on the doorsteps were winter fuel cuts, fear of cuts to disability payments, and immigration (not all in that order).'

The issue is they’re the part of the Labour Party who think their problem issue is we didn’t bring in enough immigrants and the government should have destroyed the economy more.

They may be reflecting but they are also fucking lunatics.

If they can get results in Scotland that would be hilarious but the problem is that they’ll be seen as too English and Farage is poison to the average haggis enjoyer.

The simple answer is the NHS is unsustainable with social care, it eats about 45% of GDP. We don't even have good nurses anymore, so many of them are Arab. My local council, which is one of the biggest in the UK, spends 85% of its revenue on social care. It is unsustainable.

Lincolnshire has also counted enough wards for Reform to guarantee a majority.

Derbyshire may also return a Reform majority, which would make 5 councils on current trends.

Labour have lost over 75% of all the seats they used to hold, so far (31, down 101 on where they were). Especially damning once you consider that the last time these seats were contested (2021), the results then were so bad that Starmer considered resigning as leader.

It's unsustainable because of the fucking wogs and pakis. It worked for decades, for half a century the NHS worked and was the envy of the world. Then we opened the flood gates, allowed illegal indian dr's to work on people, flooded the service with barely illiterate niggers who have the hygiene standards of a chink wet-market and imported a class of inbred, infected, diseased, unclean stinking fuckers who are used to typhoid infested water and wiping their arse with their hand.

The NHS is being milked through inefficiency for sure, but that pales in comparison to the damage the third world illegals are having. We import wogs who need more third world 'drs' to look after them, whose families put strain on the system so we import more wogs to look after them... it's a never ending cycle.

The same can be said for schools. Oh, there's 1000 extra pakis in this school year? We need more paki teachers to teach the pakis. The teachers, which have a massive paki family go to the school and burden it, which means more nigger teachers, drs, bus drivers, fewer houses etc etc.

Stop importing people. Shoot the fucking illegals. Deport anyone with a skin shade darker than Wensleydale who commits a crime and fix the country. If the MPs refuse to do this, then, in the words of JFK, "Those who make peaceful resolution impossible, will make violent revolution inevitable"

It's part of the BBC's messaging too, expect to hear, "you can't out Reform Reform, all the voters who like their policies are already voting for them," a lot.
You saw some similar rhetoric from the Left in America after Kamala Harris lost. Some argued that the DNC weren't loudly Left-wing enough and thus it cost them 2024 because they weren't energising their base. They don't view their way of thinking (pro-melting pot, high taxes, speech laws, etcetera) as being in the minority, it's just that the 'Left' weren't energised enough to go out and vote this time around because Labour weren't being Left-wing enough. He seems to have forgotten how Corbyn fared against May.

The author also spends a chunk lamenting the possibility of Labour adopting some actual social conservative ideas and warns it'll just send the left/liberals to the Lib-dems and Greens.
And you can bet that, regardless of how well or badly last night went for Labour, that will be the story this weekend. There’s a real danger that Labour learn the wrong lessons from a part of the country that is hardly representative of the United Kingdom as a whole. Labour’s strategy for combatting the rise of Reform has been to amplify Reform’s strongest issues and spend time aping Reform’s rhetoric instead of focusing on their own strengths and reform agenda. This is a Number 10 operation that seems to have fully bought into the socially conservative Blue Labour programme – what the Oxford University Professor of Comparative Democratic Institutions, Dr Ben Ansell, has called the "Glasmanification" of Labour. This in reference to Blue Labour’s founder, Baron Glasman, who recently called progressives “the enemy” on far-right provocateur and MAGA linchpin Steve Bannon’s podcast, having been introduced to Mr Bannon by one Nigel Farage.

In a classic case of confirmation bias, the Morgan McSweeney-led Number 10 operation will likely jump at the opportunity to use these local election results to double down on their strategy, even though that strategy has not worked here, nor has it worked across Western Europe.

Take a look at the same polls that predicted Reform’s gains yesterday, and you’ll find Labour losing voters on both its flanks and in the centre-ground, not just to Reform. More 2024 Labour voters now intend to vote Liberal Democrat or Green than intend to vote for Reform, and more are now undecided than intend to vote for any other single party. Not only will continuing to ape Reform drive voters open to that kind of politics into Nigel Farage’s arms, it will also alienate Labour’s left flank and more liberal voters.
I think a lot of these people also fail to consider that average person's politics is a lot more malleable than your average internet user, at least when it comes to party loyalty. Big Gaz votes Labour because his dad did, the Tories are the rich people party, and the state paid for each of his young 'uns. Big Gaz also votes reform because, while he's not a racist, he just doesn't like 'em, and through osmosis he picked up on Reform promising to make sure there's fewer of them here.

I do hope that Kier will basically oversee the death of the stereotype that Labour are the working class/poor party. I know people who aren't on benefits, are largely uninformed, but still made a big deal out of Labour making it harder to claim benefits and cutting winter fuel payments. I think that would see the true death of Labour.

why are you still roleplaying as an expat living in eastern Europe?

Reform majorities in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire have been confirmed, and Kent is also heading in that direction. So it looks like 6 majorities and a few others where they will come very close e.g. Worcestershire.

EDIT: Lancashire has also returned a substantial Reform majority, so once Kent crosses the line it will be 7.

Labour have this weird conspiracy theory that if they go left wing enough then suddenly the unwashed masses who never vote will suddenly vote for Labour in droves.

It’s retarded and there’s no evidence for it. Miliband ran his election campaign with that in mind and we all remember how well that worked out for him.

Went to Waitrose for lunch. I sneered at poor people when I left. It felt pretty good.
Might give this a go in my local Booths

Also, we aren't done here.

54%~ total votes counted

REF: 485 seats (+485) 7 councils (+7)
LD: 216 (+90)
CON: 189 (-456) 0 councils (-10)
LAB:
53 (-126)
GRN: 50 (+27)

No Overall Control: 5 councils (+3, all of which used to be Tory).

The highest estimate of Reform seat wins was about 680. We might be looking down the barrel of an 800+ Reform victory which would be DOUBLE the losses of the 2024 locals for the Tories which was I believe their worst ever local election result.

The swings are coming out higher for Reform in the safer seats which means Reform was very, very good at targeting the councils they wanted.

Since a good portion of the councils which delayed their elections were likely to be less pro-Reform, have they turned that into an advantage? Keep the momentum going, huge wins that even the media can't ignore.

I think it's the students who read Marx once and think the entire working class will unite together under a single banner if you promise them enough free shit and spout enough rhetoric. It typically comes from an idealised view of a social class they're not apart of based on movies, tv, and what they've built up in their head. They're self-aware enough to recognise they're not apart of the unwashed masses, but not enough to realise that their coddled social issue of the week or the rise of 'fascism' doesn't matter to the man who hopes his local Greggs still has a cold pack of sausage rolls left and whether or not he'd need to be racist or not at the till.

Labour could push whatever Leftie shit they want to appease certain bases of their party, but the real way to win is to promise to deport immigrants and prevent even more of them coming in — it'd be a landslide every time for them.

Turns out there is in fact a beeb page it's just hidden in a sub menu.
It's not even over yet and it's complete and total wipeout:

Checkout out the detailed results.
Literally everywhere turning the based shade of blue, in many places it isn't even close: solid 50%+ fat margins (on a respectable 30%ish turnout), resulting in complete party supermajorities at county level pretty much everywhere so far, it's 2016 all over again lads; Kemi is kooked and Starmer is stuffed (in more ways than one). TOTAL TORY DEATH/UTTER LABOUR LOSS/who the fuck cares about the libdems.
Once the full results are in we ought to petition for a feature, combined with judicially knowing what a woman this ought to be enough to get our Thread Flag fixed too.
