A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

They would have hoped everyone would have got bored of them pretending to leave the EU if the Brexit party hadn't raped the establishment in the last Euro elections.

If it looks like Reform are actually going to become a party of government after the elections expect the Tories to go full Ausländer Raus and Labour step up deportations and immigration reform.

The wheels turn slowly in this country, but once the establishment finally realise they're going to lose power then they change their minds pretty quickly.

The UK is already bankrupt. Since WWII it has existed on a veneer of sustainability while being asset stripped.

I stocked up on pantry essentials recently and it cost as much as my weekly shop used to only a few years ago.

They can’t keep importing people to fudge the numbers and Starmer is just waiting for his masters at Davos to change their instructions to account for this.

Not entirely inaccurate. Even London is feeling the pinch though. If you look at City Plan 2036, they're doing everything they can to keep the Square Mile relevant. They are putting a lot of money into trying to stimulate retail in the Square Mile. That should tell you all you need to know. Not that it'll help. Just look at how Westfield turned into Thunderdome for the local gangs.

The one glimmer of hope is that middle England begins to wake up. We have a great track record of ignoring those on the lower rungs of society, but now that the problem has arrived on Joe Normie's doorstep they are beginning to take notice. The problem is that there is no political avenue for meaningful change in the UK. What are they going to do? Vote Reform? You may as well spoil your ballot or vote Green. The voting blocs created to enable the status quo will ensure the country doesn't deviate from the path. I'd rather see Land Rovers turned into technicals advancing on Parliament.

Its ironic that jeets have come to the forefront this past couple of years, because the exact same thing we are experiencing now happened to India with our interference. If you look at the de-industrialisation of India during that time and the consequences the country suffered as a result, there are some sobering parallels. The nationalities of foreign criminals in the UK are due to be published for the first time under plans being unveiled later.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper is understood to have ordered officials to publish the data, including crimes that have been committed, by the end of the year.
There were more than 19,000 foreign offenders awaiting deportation at the end of last year, up from almost 18,000 when the Conservatives left office, figures show.
A Home Office source said the government wanted the public to be better informed about foreign criminals, including where they come from.
The Tories say Tuesday's commitment showed Labour had "buckled" after being pressured to disclose the figures.
In response, government sources insist the move was only possible because Cooper ordered Home Office statisticians to overhaul their systems.
Foreign nationals sentenced to 12 months or more in prison are subject to automatic deportation.
The home secretary has the power to deport people who receive a shorter sentence if she decides their presence in the UK is not conducive to the public good.
Home Office sources blame the increase in foreign criminals awaiting deportation on early releases due to prison overcrowding, instability in some countries making deportations difficult, and a litany of appeals against deportation on human rights grounds.
The rise came despite more offenders being deported since Labour came to power.
Home Office figures are expected to show the main three nationalities for foreign criminals living in the community are Albanians, Romanians and Poles.

Altogether, 2,500 personnel from the Royal Navy, almost 600 from the RAF, and about 900 from the British Army will take part in the exercises.

I sincerely hope this really is just an exercise and not the culmination of Macron and Starmer scheming to get directly involved by sending in "peace keepers". It's the sort of thing they'd try though - the moment there's any kind of ceasefire, rush European troops in and as close to the frontline as possible so they can play "you're not touching me" with the Russians.
