A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I am beyond angry, lads. I don’t think even a Greggs can save me.
We're escalating to Cheeky Nandos. Things will only really pop off when we get to friday night kebab.

I'd be shocked if she's actually on £150k.
I wouldn't. Look at her linktree, she's neck-deep in women-in-tech grifting, and tech grifting in general, to the point of having some sort of weird NFT collection. Two medium articles that detail her journey in the grift. I have no doubt she's working in "devops" as a diversity hire on an outsized salary.

Yeah, since writing that I found her LinkedIn: https://uk.linkedin.com/in/🚀-yasmin-benjamin-msc-997769b9, https://archive.is/1iDlu. Depressing stuff.
She's the most Indian non-Indian I've ever seen

They're going to crash the ecconomy just the same as Liz's would have but I guarantee they won't be scrambling to get this lot out of power because they'll be nuking it in the approved way.

"We won't increase tax on working people, just in multiple ways that impact working people the hardest. Also enjoy 6 years of fiscal drag, a massive real terms tax hike without actually raising taxes."

The national debt will decrease even though we're borrowing more. We're just going to pretend some of it doesn't exist.

A little over an hour until the budget drops. I was watching sky news and they kept repeating 11am and that was just the photo op ffs. So lads how fucked do you think we are?

Very. They're going full hostile to private business and shareholders while expecting that to magically not impact on working people.

Fiscal drag is a significant stealth tax that they're predicted to make it worse by freezing bands until 2030.

In 1990 3.5% of then population paid higher rate tax, that is projected yo be 14% by 2028.

Of course if you try saying that on reddit you get shouted down by idiots saying "well people will still be paid more, you dont lose money by going into the next tax bracket". Which is just stupid, yes you earn more even though you are taxed higher, you earn less than you would if the bands moved as they should.

It's all just more squeeze the middle that's been going on for decades.

So incredibly fucked that I'm seriously getting rainbows over the idea that this might be an eleventy-dimensional chess move by some nefarious party to destroy Starmer or Reeves. Or both. I know I'll be disappointed, but the fantasy is nice.

There's a slim chance the budget will be so terrible that the party consensus will fracture. But again, I know I'll be disappointed.

It's not a workers budget. It will buy off a couple of public sector unions in ways that fuck them over in the long term and will probably include more pay increases for people who already have enough, and it will tax whole economic sectors out of existence, because politicians never understand second-order effects. It's going to be a a completely avoidable clusterfuck.

Edit: I bet they'll fuck over farming as well. They'll do everything they can to get in the way and destroy any hope of agricultural recovery with their environmental and "nature first" barmy bullshit that only really cares about how pretty the flowers look. We're getting west ox council writ large. A bunch of interfering urbanite NIMBys who view "the countryside" as a theme-park for their own enjoyment and resent the fact that it's actually a gigantic industrial operation.

They don't seem to understand that pay increases don't matter much if they're taxed up the arse in other ways and small businesses are destroyed by such punitive measures. Kind of like how the coof was a speedrun to beat the wealth out of the lower classes which was sweetened by furlough and Eat Out To Help Out.

Reeves - I will increase pay by £1400, employees will be better off by said amount

Also, Reeves, - I will remove council tax discounts, NI is up, Paye is up, and rents will increase unlimitedly.

Imagine being this much of a disingenuous retarded cunt, who is probably getting spit roasted by the cabinet.

Could have stopped there tbh.

Yes they do, the current Labour party hate their old base and want to see them reduced to the sort of quality of life the average sweat shop worker has.

Don't anyone put this down to ignorance, Labour is one more political party working hand in glove with the worst people on the planet. Hell, they're even targeting their alleged allies because Blair's pushing for AI to replace civil servants.

Former prime minister Sir Tony Blair has launched a policy paper pushing the potential for government to save billions of pounds a year through the greater use of artificial intelligence across the public sector.

Blair's think tank, the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, this morning published a paper suggesting that the adoption of AI across the UK public sector could save around 20% of workforce time – amounting to £10bn a year by the end of the new parliament.

The TBI said that by the end of the next parliament, the annual savings could be £34bn a year. A related paper on impact for the public sector workforce acknowledged that over the two-decade period around 1.15 million jobs would be lost as a result of the drive. It said the cost of those job losses would be redundancy payments in the region of £24bn at today's prices.

The think tank said the current government – and future governments – could choose how they spent the money that would be saved by the use of AI, either investing the savings in better frontline services or banking the proceeds for HM Treasury.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Blair said some parts of government's work had potential to yield greater savings from the use of AI than others.

"Government's all about process. You can automate a lot of these processes," he said. "We have a report specifically around the saving of workforce time in the public sector, which we estimate at 20%. But in the DWP – the Department of Work and Pensions [sic] – where we've done a deep dive with one of the UK's leading AI companies, we believe that you could automate 40% of the tasks there. And also, by the way, give a much better service to people."

The TBI report urges ministers to create a "mission control" at the centre of government that would be focused on harnessing technology to drive the adoption of AI technology. It says the move should be complemented by the creation of new chief productivity officers in all major government departments and a new "technology and forecasting unit" in HM Treasury that would explore how the use of AI should evolve.

A study published in March found that around four in five of the government’s decision-based services are highly automatable.

In addition to the further automation of business-as-usual tasks in departments and other parts of the public sector, the Blair Institute is calling for greater use of AI in preventative health and for the introduction of a digital ID system.

It says that could improve services and save citizens time in their interactions with government – as well as generating £2bn a year through reduced benefit-fraud and improved tax-collection.
I've not found any articles confirming it but I've seen Private Eye claim that Blair produced this AI claim by getting figures from AI. I'm certain a lot of posters here have seen articles explaining how AI often overestimates what it can do.

Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle begins with a statement, reminding MPs not to say anything that could prejudice the trial of the person accused of murdering three young girls in Southport in July this year.
Fuck you Lindsay for banning the fact that the politicians, police and media collaborated to bury the fact that the murderous slime was a terrorist, did commit an act of terrorism and almost certainly picked his targets for very specific reasons.

Here we go, take a deep breath. See how much wanking they do about woman chancellor while ignoring the mess it's about to be.

Stop prattling on about postwar era and get on with the budget.

I nean, AI would honestly do a better job most of the time.
Remember that the AI for the job will be chosen by and trained on the work of existing civil servants, of the options brought to them by people like Blair.

Roadkill will be able to do a better job than the AI they end up going with.
