A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Ah, Peep Show. Who needs romance when you're doing it up the bum, I am doing EXCELLENT shopping and FOUR NAAN are all excellent lines that make me crease to this day.
The secret ingredient is crime!
I adore peep show and the Mitchell and web look has some very funny moments too.
Big Train was intermittently amusing , and what was the one Scottish one with Stoneybridge and Gregor and his ‘no wasps’ sign? I think it was called Absolutely or something like that.

Used to love Bo Selecta, there was an option on the DVDs to turn off the laugh track which made it 1000x better. Its a shame the creator cucked out and apologised for making fun of poofters and niggers.

Can anyone remembeŕ the name of the cartoon that came on after TFI friday? It was a British made show about some NEET (i think) who had a black pal named Benjamin. Its always alluded me. I was far too young to be staying up that time. Chatgpt hasnt been much help..

On the subject of that fire, they should have had lithium appropriate extinguishers in the shop and should have known how to use them.

Also damning the one at the subway franchise was nearly empty. If you use a fire extinguisher then you need to get the supplier out to recharge it.

Whole thing smells rotten to me tbh. Some shenanigans were going on.

It was called Absolutely, and was absolutely hilarious.
Stoneybridge! For the stoney bridge.

Harry Enfield's Television Programme was another classic. My friend and I once dressed up as the old gits for Halloween.

I’m positively antediluvian.

There are going to be more infernos down to lithium batteries, they’re so dangerous. I’m amazed a car passenger ferry hasn’t gone up yet, there’s been a few car transporters that have.

I also worry about all the battery storage facilities that are being thrown up everywhere. Ticking time bombs.

Those house fires over Christmas? I am absolutely certain those were caused by parents buying their kids chinesium crap with dodgy chargers. Probably electric scooters. You know, those ones you absolutely cannot use anywhere except private land.

Play stupid games,win stupid prizes.

Last year I wanted a couple of dehumidifiers and there's some nice looking little ones I found on Amazon but I thought better of it. Fwiw they both had nothing but excellent reviews, no safety concerns raised at all,but it just seemed a bad idea, so I went to a local hardware store and bought one really decent one that's British made. Pennies to run and the house is so much warmer.

If you go thru the replies to the First Ministers posts or any scottish page, its FULL of people Noticing the art school burning down, and several other buildings to be rebuilt into shit flats. I've only seen one or two defensive "don't blame immigrants" comments- which makes me wonder, if a building burns down and you think people are going to blame immigrants, why is that your first connection?

There is a lot of calls from all sides of the public to rebuild it as it was, see if Reform or Restore get behind some kind of "all buildings must be traditional" policies. Would be great to see.

No, a random homeless black man just happened to run in and try to put the fire out. Then started to shoo people away right in front of the guy filming.

A subway being empty next to a major station seems very unlikely as well. Any where near a big station is always packed.

A story that's gone under the radar; more ethnic violence in Harrow

Brawl at Holi event in London. UK Hindu group blames Muslims

New Delhi: A Holi celebration was briefly disrupted on the evening of 3 March after a group of Muslim youth allegedly created a ruckus at the former Harrow Civic Centre car park on Station Road in London’s northwest borough of Harrow.

The video was shared on X by Insight UK, an advocacy group for British Hindu communities. The event, organised to mark Holika Dahan, drew hundreds of people, including British Hindu families and local dignitaries, to celebrate the festival of colours and renewal.

The post soon gained momentum online and triggered backlash, with many people saying the incident was “shameful” and “disgusting.” The video, however, doesn’t substantiate whether the people involved in the brawl were muslim or not.

It has since been reposted several times, with many demanding equal protection under UK law and calling for an immediate investigation.

The post alleged that the event organised by the International Siddhashram Shakti Centre had received prior permission from the local council and was attended by several civic leaders, including two serving mayors, councillors, council portfolio holders, and a London Fire Brigade commander, reflecting cross-party support for the community celebration.

It further claimed that a group of young men, who allegedly came from a nearby mosque, attacked the attendees and pushed over the speakers. They reportedly left shortly but returned with 20 more people to renew the assault on the event’s attendees.

Local news portal, Harrow Online, reported that a brawl did erupt during the celebrations, but did not mention whether it was a religiously-charged attack, nor did it say that the attackers returned with a larger group. Witness accounts allege that bins were thrown and some attendees were harassed before the situation escalated into a fight. The report also states that police were called to the scene and that some individuals fled the area.

Officers were called to the scene at approximately 8:50 pm following reports of a mass brawl breaking out at the site, and arrested a 14-year-old boy shortly after arriving. The London Fire Brigade also confirmed that a false report of a fire at the area at around 9 pm later that day.

The report further claimed that an investigation into the incident is ongoing, and more details are awaited.

Gang of 20 'mosque thugs' attack worshippers at Hindu festival in London - just one arrest made

Chaos erupted in London last week after a gang of Muslim youths attacked peaceful worshippers at a Hindu festival, leading to just one arrest.

The incident occurred on March 3 at an event celebrating the festival of Holi outside the Harrow Civic Centre, which lies directly opposite Harrow Central Mosque.

The event was organised by the International Siddhashram Shakti Centre (ISSC), with around 1,000 people in attendance.

However, organisers said chaos erupted just after 8.30pm when three teenagers - identified as being from the "mosque area" - turned up and switched off the event's sound system.

Shri Rajrajeshwar Guruji, founder of the ISSC, said: "They chucked the speakers on the ground and ran away. The speakers are now broken, They came from the mosque area."

He added: "Five minutes later they returned with 15 to 20 boys, some in balaclavas... they threw beers cans into the fire, threw glass bottles and hurled barriers on the ground.

"The Sikh security guard went over and they tried to harm him as well.

"They wanted to fight and we were trying to defend ourselves. It got out of control so we called the police."

The mob is said to have fled the scene after hearing police sirens approaching the area.

One of the youths was chased down and apprehended by the worshippers, who then handed him over to the police.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: “A 14-year-old boy remains in police custody following an incident in Harrow.

“Police were called to reports of a disturbance at a civic centre in Station Road at around 8.50pm on Tuesday, March 3.

"Police arrived on scene within minutes and arrested the boy on suspicion of affray shortly after 9pm.

“No injuries were reported.”

Bob Blackman, Conservative MP for Harrow East, said he was "appalled" by the incident.

He wrote on social media: "More than a thousand people attended the annual Holi celebration at the old Harrow Civic Centre car park, an event that has run for many years and is a joyful occasion for our whole community.

"What should have been a night of celebration was violently disrupted when thugs from the Central Mosque left the mosque and decided to disrupt proceedings."

He had earlier told the Commons: "This is in Harrow where we have excellent community relations, and I hope this will not happen anywhere else or again.

"But the sad reality is community tensions are rising because of various different things across the world, and it is our responsibility as politicians to cool things down."

The Conservative MP added that he had "serious questions" for the Met over the force's handling of the chaos.

He said: "Despite up to 20 attackers being present, only one arrest has been made.

"Even more troubling, the official police statement contradicts the accounts of organisers, victims, and every eyewitness on the ground, and refuses to acknowledge this as a targeted attack on a Hindu religious celebration.

"The Met must explain this contradiction and confirm that a full investigation is under way to bring all those responsible to justice."

Harrow councillor Susan Hall added: "Not good enough! We have an incredible Hindu community in Harrow... Peace loving gentle folk. How dare they attack the Holi celebrations!"
