John's not wrong though.

Oliver! over 2001: a space odyssey
Apartment
over Psycho, which was not nominated. [I'm a Billy Wilder fan, but ... no]
Sting over Exorcist
Ordinary People
over Empire Strikes Back

It's not like all of those winners are worthless, but ... when was the last time you saw someone reference Ordinary People or Apartment? Oliver! has the "Please sir, I'd like some more" scene, but one of those two films is being discussed a good fifty years on. And the gap between Kramer vs Kramer and Shining is even bigger.

And I wouldn't even call Parasite a horror film. The funny scenes outweigh the horror moments.

This has been going on forever. How Green Was My Valley over Citizen Kane. The Greatest Show on Earth over High Noon. Albert Finney, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, and Jack Nicholson all losing to fucking Art Carney as an old man wandering across America with his pet cat.

Honestly, the best thing about the Oscars is arguing about how they got it wrong, and it always has been.

The Greatest Show on Earth over High Noon.

I wanted to bring this up, but thought "A Western" would muddy the waters, even though it's as much a despised genre (for its time) as horror and SF is now.

Billy Wilder was brilliant, but I wouldn't pick Apartment over Some Like it Hot or Ace in the Hole. How many people reading can describe The Apartment but not Psycho?

The Oscars have always been first and foremost a self-congratulatory jerking session for Hollywood and it's just a panel of old, obscenely rich people picking movies they get paid to choose liked. The difference between the Academy Awards and any other industry's award show is they have spent ludicrous amounts of money over the years to promote it as something people should care about.

And in Wu's defense, if there is one thing I can believe she's an expert in is being a self-congratulatory jerkoff.

I don't know that I'd agree with this. Cimarron won back in the 30s. If High Noon was snubbed, it was probably more due to its perceived anti-Americanism in a time when that was a very big no-no.

The Oscars are all politics, not based on actual achievement or merit. News at 11.

comedy as well

It's a pretty old saw to bitch about horror/sff/comedy almost anything besides drama not winning or at least being a heavy underdog

but with parasite having more comedy than horror elements - comedy and horror go hand in hand (that's the whole "black" thing) they are kind of 2 side of the same card

"It's not like all of those winners are worthless"
yeah, that can just the inverse. You named some really strong films that I really don't fault
the sting is ultra classic
the injury scene in KvsK is super powerful
ordinary people is powerful

as SF/F (more SF for me than F) fans, we can do the same thing
(I remember as a kid feeling totally ripped off Jaws didn't win)
- don't wanna troon out and go "cause I a'troonin I not respected"

The oscars were originally designed as a marketing vehicle to support the seasonal slump.
so they really aren't THAT legit anyway, but it got already brought up
John's just another sheeple in that because all he was focusing on was BEST PICTURE

just like "SF never respected" the technicals are given second tier - and that's ben a point of contention for a long time.
and it's really a shame
it's like how the olympics shows ice dancing, any sport an american is doing well in, and figureskating followed by more ice dancing

(heh, come to thing of it. I think they may have even actually gotten rid of the technicals in figure skating - they used to televise it for like 5 mins over the fortnite)

A lot of films, like 2001 - well a lot of Kubric- have its merits in the cinematography, so they are going to be more heavilly technical

the idea of "best film" itself is kind of bullshit. it's just not focused enough so it just becomes TOO interpretive.

the injury scene in KvsK is super powerful
ugh, I'm not one for the those who are parents having some special knowledge trip. I find the "oh, you'd understand if you had kids" is an offensive arrogance of privileged reference frame).I would just say that it has particular resonance with those who have kids, it's a nightmare you didn't think up just served to you.
that one haunts me still

Probably has nothing to do with mainstream Democrats being pro-riot race hucksters.

So don't dumbass. find a sport or activity.
you are the troon, not him so sports should roll out a red carpet.

and no john, the "lockdown" doesn't stop individual sport AND you are ony 2 weeks away from what YOU think is safe...so that excuse wil only work for a little while longer

start with walks, or bouldering or...any fucking thing that isn't " losing" at legos

Republicans should just be killed on sight at this point, John. That will bring healing to a divided America.

Wow! just wow!
I've seen John outright lie, exaggerate achievements, humble brag about stuff that endangers lives, neglect animals in his care, engage in sexism, casual racism and body shaming

but this is a new low..."but for what!?! you say. For world domination? nay, for something far more tacky" (cereal Killer - hackers)

but this, riding on someon else's campaign materails for self-promotion b/c you happen to have the same last name...it's just tacky
[let' not pretend John]

Right because just tapping "deny" when the prompt appeared was TOOOO HAAAARD.

If Apple is so damn altruistic why dont they just block cross-site/app tracking altogether? Who the hell actually consciously acquiesces to that?

Also nice to see that youre so fed up with NSAcebook that you actually install their fucking app on your phone. (and i wouldnt be the least bit surprised if FB can still do 95% of their tracking even when "denied")

But that's not a political condom. It's a vanity condom.

I know eight people who have had corona, and none of them thought it was all that bad. Even the guy who is a bit of a hypochondriac said "i've had worse hangovers than this."

Someone should ask Brianna if she's worried about the reported side effects menstruating women suffer.
