You could probably argue Modern Warfare (2007) as a touchstone as Halo finally had competition in the online FPS space on consoles and it propelled the Call of Duty to another stratosphere but I'm not sure where Wu is coming up with 2009.

This is true, CoD4: Modern Warfare exploded and no one was expecting it to become that huge. It didn't get the cover in Edge, did not get a spread, it got scheduled for a one page review further back in the magazine. It was just another Call of Duty, good games, but it was already an annual series at that point(1 in 2003, 2 in 2005, 3 in 2006, 4 in 2007) so how different can it be?
I don't remember when Wu hooked up with Frank but looking at his purchasing history of vidya it was very sparse until he got hold of his credit card.
