It is practiced by only the most fanantic of pentacostals, usually. Serious question: what's the death rate here?


27 Americans killed by lightning strike a year, averaged over ten years. Just shy on one per ten million, which might serve as a good benchmark for "too few to fucking worry about."

Wikipedia lists two deaths by poisonous snakes in 2019. One was a 62 year old woman allergic to antivenom. Neither case involved church services.

The last person who was bitten by a snake and died during religious services was in 2015. He refused treatment, so Darwin in action. Since that death, 125 Americans have been killed by lightning strikes.

NOTE: 40 killed by lightning in 2016. I blame the election year, which clearly pissed off God.

Snake handling is mostly practiced in north Mississippi. That's the edge of Appalachia, and snake handling in general is more of an Appalachian thing than a southern thing. Mostly it's a rare to the point of nonexistence thing. I doubt the Mississippi Baffle has ever been within two hundred miles of a snake-handling ceremony.
