Sure, if by "change" you mean "invent." This story was fabricated from whole cloth at some point in the last few years, before then her life of grinding poverty never existed.
The reality is that up until September of 2006 she was living on cash from the Bank of Daddy. In March of 2007 she's on Susan's place talking about shemales and describing herself as "your party princess." Not a single mention of living in her car, being hungry or having a shitty boss can be found in any of Wu's internet receipts. The one year where she was between men she was sponging off really didn't seem to have much hardship in it.
That's one thing John has going for him that makes it harder to point out the truth: his age.
John's in his early 40s now, with his high school years covering the early 90s. Despite his claims of being super hacker whiz kid Brianna, whatever internet presence he might have had then is almost guaranteed lost to the vagaries of time. Not that many websites from back then that are still around, and I have doubts he was a Usenet regular.
Then we have his college years, spanning from 1996 to 2006. Most of that period was in the web 1.0 days, so we run into the same problem: whatever he was doing online back then is probably gone, forums shut down and servers taken offline. Social media didn't really catch on until Myspace launched towards the tail end of his college days, so he hadn't really been conditioned yet to share and overshare like most people today. Not only that, but he probably didn't start using the "spacekatgal" name until the tail end of this period, and without an earlier username, it's all the harder to know what he was posting back then.
Since John's been pulling the troon schtick for well over a decade at this point, that's pretty much the entirety of his web history. A troon who started in the past few years will generally have years of history to trawl through, but John effectively has nothing pre-Brianna. Thus, he can go about lying about his family (claiming he was adopted when he was actually their biological son, claiming he was thrown out for being "queer" when it was either due to wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars or being trans, or both), lying about his work history (claiming experience in all kinds of jobs when the only provable ones are interning for Trent Lott and working at a Gamestop for a couple months), and of course the big lie about not being John Walker Flynt. Without years of embarrassing pre-transition web history, he can get away with lying to most people because a cursory internet search won't offer any alternative.
The amount of stuff that
has been dug up is commendable for that reason, but unless an old username is found or someone with firsthand knowledge of his pre-transition days comes forward, he's free to keep making up his life whole cloth.
