There's a reason that you'll still find 386es in space. Newer processors with ultra-miniaturized components are a lot more susceptible to having a bit flipped by a stray cosmic ray. Much of that kind of radiation is filtered out by the atmosphere, but in space, lots of hard radiation that goes through metal like empty space hits any electronics up there. Much of what they use now is custom fabricated and specifically radiation-hardened.

They probably kept the ancient 8 inch floppy systems because you don't want to swap a known quantity out for something that could behave erratically.

Think about the bullshit that happened when some genius decided to run Windows on combat control systems on aircraft carriers.

You can't hack a system you can't access. You also need something that is hardened and tested to stand against EMP.

Yep. Not to mention that the system currently works as they need it to. It's secure and functional. Why upgrade it to something that could potentially not be secure and/or functional? Why take the risk?
 
John’s that idiot that thinks newer/more expensive = better. The not surprising thing in all of this is that he claims to be a cyber security/tech expert and yet doesn’t understand the very basics of why these older systems are so secure and nearly foolproof.

I feel like if Wu was in charge of the security of our nuclear launch facilities, the very first thing she would do is connect it to wifi. This way it can always get the latest security updates, you see.

The problem with security through obscurity/obsolesence is that it's extremely difficult to source replacement components that are no longer being manufactured. That makes repair much more expensive and time-consuming, as an out of production component would need to be delicately repaired by a dwindling number of specialists.

That's why it's being modernised.
 
Sure, there's reasons to upgrade systems that work; it makes it easier to find spare parts, people who can maintain them, and newer systems might be easier to use. Some of those old-timey greenscreens are more cryptic than DOS Adventure games.

"Security" is generally not one of them. John's a poseur and he makes it obvious with every tweet.
 
It bugs me that, after 3 years of this charade, Wu still hasn't bothered to look up the exact name of this "tech committee" she hopes to serve on.
