Turkey has been collaborating with ISIS for a long time - ever wonder why ISIS hit Iraq and Syria but never spread to Turkey? Its cause you don't attack your friends.* Turkey is pushing into northern Syria to create a "safe zone" to resettle at least some of the almost 4 million Syrian refugees they are housing. Turkey is collaborating with "Turkish allied rebel groups" - aka ISIS militia who switched allegiance as the ISIS state fell apart due to getting bombkakked.
Turkey is having these militia lead the way as they push into Syria because currently the area is held by Kurdish Militia. Kurdish Militia do not like the Turks, and most of those still in the region are there with the express interest of fighting and killing Turks. So they are using these Syrian fighters to attack and clear out the Kurdish fighters (or more specifically to act as spotters for Turkish airstrikes) so they don't have a messy and costly war on their TVs.
The Kurds are very progressive for Arabs - they have women leaders, they have women Militia units in combat. This does not make them popular with hardline regressive Islamists.
Kurdish Militia have been running areas of northern Syria, acting as the state - providing protection, services, and courts. These areas have been pretty stable for the past few years, minus occasional fuckery from Turkey. People in these areas appreciate the Kurds are running things well, and not genociding people of different backgrounds or religion. However the islamic hard liners in the region are unhappy with very haram changes, like women allowed to go outside with their heads and faces uncovered like common whores, corrupting the minds of young men.
As Turkey is letting their former-ISIS militia lead the charge, these rebels are operating with no rules of engagement or accountability, and working with their fundie buddies to get some reprisals against these fucking socialists** who are degrading the moral fabric of society before the Turkish army shows up.
What happened:
Nine civilian leaders from Kurdish-controlled Northern Syria are reported to have been executed by Turkey's ISIS-lite, this woman being one of them. The current story is she was fleeing*** the Turkish & Turkish militia advance, got stopped by a road block, recognized, dragged from the car, raped and then stoned to death.
John is flipping out on Ivanka because Trump pulled all US troops from Northern Syria. As there were no American or Russian troops in the region, this meant that Turkey could send in its army, more or less off the leash, without provoking too big of a international incident.
So because Ivanka's father decided the US should stop meddling directly & militarily in the affairs of a foreign nation, and because Islamic fundies executed a female politician****, Ivanka has no respect for women's rights.
*OK the other reason for that is that ISIS would have been spreading into Kurdish areas of Turkey, and having gotten their shit pushed all the way in when they tried to fuck with the Kurds in Iraq, were relucant to get another taste.
** The Kurds' parent political entity is 100% pure-strain socialist. Let's not get into that right now.
