I'm going to rate myself :autistic: in advance for this one, but I have an axe to grind...

Miguel de Icaza was already a personal lolcow of mine, but his continuing interactions with Wu could push him over in to global lolcow territory. For anyone who doesn't know who that is, he was one of the founders of the GNOME project, which builds the chief Linux desktop environment. For a good few years, Linux bobbled along as a hobbyist operating system, but then Microsoft had a good 5-7 year stretch of one fuck up after another around the turn of the century, and people began openly talking about Linux as a viable desktop alternative.

Enter Miguel, the useful idiot who decided to derail this momentum. Around that time, Microsoft released what was then called the .NET runtime environment and the C# language. Miguel decided this was the best thing since sliced bread, and set about creating an open source clone of it. Fair enough so far, except that he felt it was so awesome that the GNOME project should basically drop everything and rewrite the world in C# and, because he was still a big wheel in the Open Source world at the time, people actually listened to him. There was like this 3-4 year period after Gnome 2 released that everything ground to a halt while the whole project ran around chasing its tail over C# bindings and new C# applications duplicating already spent effort, all of which are now deader than A-line flairs with pockets in the knees. Any momentum Linux on the desktop had screeched to a halt and we had various internecine wars where people went off to build their own desktops with blackjack and hookers because Gnome wasn't making any progress, and what did change was for the worse.

Miguel then promptly defected to Mac OS X and was given a job at Microsoft in recognition of his services to preserving their desktop monopoly. Now he apparently considers Wu a friend, which tells you something about his judgement. He probably thinks she's a software engineer too.

I guess maybe blaming everything on Miguel is a bit much, since Gnome is now entering phase two of chasing its tail over a language that isn't C. Now all the world must be rewritten in javascript or some shit. Who the fuck cares any more.

Anyway, :autism: over. resume normal service.

Oh jeez, now I remember that guy. He has been totally obscured by that sabotager Lennart for me. Examples of his interactions with Wu would be great!

This shit gave me autism.

I'm going to respond to that autism with some more autism.

And those opinions are NO. NO. STOP. NO.

When bad things happen, it's never the fault of the method those people use to communicate that they did the bad thing. The paternalist in all of us can be seduced by the lulling rhetoric of "we must stop fake news because it's causing lynchings." However, you boil that down to its Orwellian essence and you get "we must control the information people see in order to control their behaviour" which doesn't sound nearly as good. Does any of us really want someone in charge of deciding for us what is true and what is false, and how long do you think it's going to be before they start using that power to manipulate us for their own benefit?

What's happening in India is what is bound to happen when you drop first world telecommunication infrastructure on a third world community. This is exactly how criminals and other reprobates were handled in the pre-modern era. Before we had jails and police, social ostracism, banishment and lynchings were the tools people used to enforce societal norms. Many, many Indians still live in that society. There's amusing expressions of the fact we have pre-modern people on our modern internet, vis. show bobs and vagene, and there's the less amusing part that people are forming themselves in to lynch mobs to tackle criminals, and sometimes they get their targets wrong. India needs to work on trust in the police and making it so most people's encounters with officialdom are positive and not excuses to extort a bribe. Blaming their societal ills on a messaging app is just stupid.

Or to put it another way:

I have never seen a tweetstorm that started 1/whatever that ended well.

All announcing that the moronic shit you're about to say will have more than one tweet in it says to me is "ignore me now."

Nothing anyone has to say on twitter needs more than 140 characters. Just say it, just spit it the fuck out you cocksucker.

I'm confused about Wu's point. Facebook removed privacy from WhatsApp, which is bad, but whatsapp still has privacy somehow and that is bad because india?

I don't think Wu really understands any of the issues. FACEBOOK BAD BECAUSE PRIVACY is a message her little lab rat brain has noticed gets her the endorphin rush reward of likes and retweets on twitter. The India issue which is Facebook asserting the basic privacy and security of their product against a government who want backdoors and censorship is just more FACEBOOK BAD, so in Wu's mind it doesn't contradict.
