One one hand, I want her to lose and continue living as a miserable failure.

On the other, I really, really want her to win, just because it'd be like that Spiderman "lol what the fuck am I doing" meme made flesh. So conflicted.

Best outcome: She loses the election and is then investigated by the FBI, cause she funneled some money off her campaign into some hair-regain surgery for her male-pattern baldness.

The outline of that covered car looks a lot more like an Audi tt than a Porsche
That's what I thought at first glance, but the Audi hasn't been seen in forever. He said they traded the Audi in for the 1st Porsche and I believe it. Then again I thought Frank would limit John to one mid-life crisis car at a time and yet here were are.

To anyone just joining us because the thread is featured, we're are car number 4 for 2018. John fucked up a lemon of a used Audi TT trying to "restore" it and traded it in for a used $40k Porsche. He backed that into a pole while complaining that some cisbro cut him off in traffic and raped him or some shit. Then he ordered a new $110k Porsche only to realize it was ridiculously garish for his neighborhood and the the "Man of the People" politician schtick he was half-assing. We're on Porsche #3, the "cheap" convertible he used as a campaign vehicle. He was ridiculed for being so out of touch for the constituents of the 8th District because of it.

He's tried installing bluetooth stereo bs in all of them so he can connect his phone and has failed spectacularly each time. His Godzilla of Tech and engineering skills are in full effect.

Did Brianna Wu get shafted by the Globe’s choice of photos?

Brianna Wu may be the most tech-savvy candidate running for Congress in Massachusetts this year. But would you vote for her or her opponents on Tuesday, based on this set of photos that appeared in the The Boston Globe’s guide to the primary election?

brianna-wu.jpg

The guy on the left is incumbent Stephen Lynch, campaigning. The guy on the right is fighter pilot Christopher L. Voehl, standing in front of a wooden flag. The woman in the middle is Brianna Wu from many years ago, when she was a game developer and a victim in the Gamergate scandal.

Wu became apoplectic on Twitter when the photos appeared. Soon after, one of her followers noticed that her name was not included in the metadata for the page, which would make it hard to find in searches.

Wu claims this is not an appropriate representation of how she looks now, while campaigning. Here’s her tweet:

After the criticism, the Globe replaced her picture with this one, from a television appearance:

This is still an odd choice, with the candidate off-center (she is cropped out in some mobile views). It’s especially odd since the Globe published an article less than a week earlier about her campaigning challenges, including this photo:

After the flap, the Globe released this statement:

An online primary guide we published this week featured an archive photo of Brianna Wu, a Democratic candidate for the Eight Congressional District. As soon as she brought it to our attention, we changed the photo to a more recent picture from her campaign. We called her this morning to apologize, explained that an older photo was used, and described the steps we’ve taken to rectify it. We’re sorry for this mistake. Additionally, she raised questions about the meta keywords on the article. These keywords are generated automatically, but we’ve manually added her name to the code to make sure it appears.

Is media reality?
Wu has a point. The original photo makes her look like looney next to two solid citizens. Stephen Lynch is the most conservative Democrat in the Massachusetts delegation, and Christopher Voehl’s positions are also to the right of Wu’s. I’ve followed Wu’s tweets and statements closely, and her positions mirror and in some cases are more liberal than our liberal senator, Elizabeth Warren.

Does the guide matter? Absolutely. For voters who are actually making a choice in this race, as opposed to voting for the incumbent by habit or staying home, the Boston Globe’s election guide may be the most influential piece of media they see.

Does the photo choice matter? Definitely. Photos make an impression. Anyone concerned about whether Wu is out of the mainstream had those concerns inflamed by the choice of photo — at least until the Globe changed it. And the replacement photo makes no sense given they already had a photo of Wu campaigning (and looking more like a hard campaigner, just like the two men in the race).

The photo editor’s choice is just as much a problem as if there was an inaccuracy in the text.

(She works out at my gym. I’m not judging her based on how she looks on the stairclimber, either, although I do give her credit for working on keeping in shape.)

Wu’s past is absolutely an issue. If you would never vote for someone with a dyed red streak in her hair, then I guess you have a right to know what Wu used to look like. But if you are choosing one iconic photo to use to represent her, that’s not a fair choice, especially compared to her opponents’ photos. The Globe is capable of showing decent photos of other women congressional candidates, like these, in the same guide:

Every choice a media outlet makes matters. You never see the “whole” story, and the question of balance is a tricky one.

Every media outlet must hold itself accountable, as the Globe did here.

Consumers of media, especially voters, must find multiple sources. The original photo of Brianna Wu is one side of her. The other photos are other sides of her. You need to know all of them to make a choice. In the case of this district, there’s no better showcase than @spacekatgal, Brianna Wu’s Twitter feed. When you can see the candidate’s unvarnished viewpoints, you can learn a lot.

We need independent media, even when they make mistakes. The Globe screwed up here. But we’d be lost without them. Media organizations like the Globe ought to be hard on themselves about this stuff. Because I’d much rather see that, than see government regulating them in the name of “fake news.”

It got it's own thread. Not sure if everything in the main was moved over there, but it's here.

Massachusetts Eighth Congressional District: video game developer Brianna Wu is challenging Rep. Stephen Lynch
Who are the Democrats? Rep. Stephen Lynch, in office since 2001. Lynch is being challenged by video game developer Brianna Wu and Air Force veteran Christopher Voehl.

Who are the Republicans? None.

What’s the story? Similarly to MA-07, the Eighth District Congressional race has gotten a lot of attention due to Wu’s challenge to longtime Rep. Lynch. Wu, a video game developer in Massachusetts, drew a lot of attention a few years ago for being one of the female gamers targeted by online trolls in “Gamergate.” Wu received rape and death threats, and she has said that she decided to run for Congress after Trump’s election in 2016 (there’s crossoverbetween the Gamergate movement and Trump’s alt-right online supporters).

Wu and fellow candidate Voehl are vying to replace Lynch. Wu, in particular, argues that Lynch’s past conservative positions on social issues (which he has since shifted), should disqualify him from office in 2018. Lynch is also likely to take some heat for his past vote against the Affordable Care Act.

I still can't get over having your campaign vehicle be a fucking Porsche. Every time I see it I'm struck by just how tone-deaf Wu is. "Look at how frivolous and impractical I can be!"

Considering the abysmal practical outcome of the ACA, it really just shows Stephen Lynch is one of the better members of Congress and it's a shame his election is turned into a circus by some clown

Did Brianna Wu get shafted by the Globe’s choice of photos?
As much as the author wants to make a fuss over Brianna's Boston Globe photo, I dare them to try and find one decent pic of Brianna Wu to use for it. She's had professional photos taken, but the ones we've seen have all been Photoshopped to hell and back to try to make Brianna look even plausibly human.

And I find it hilarious that one of their suggested better options is one with Brianna looking down and showing off the male pattern baldness.

Ugh, quit being a gamergate harasser. You can get them for like $8k. They're completely accessible.
This is what John says when someone comments about it.

I look forward to kicking back with a pizza and a few drinks and enjoying the primary results this evening.

Ehh it would be hard to get rid of him and he’d have a national stage for his lunacy.

While it would be entertaining to hear an insane, shrieking tranny harp about cis white men and gamers in Congress I don’t want him winning and gaining any power. I want Brianna Wu to remain a miserable failure. Every project he starts ends in failure, that shouldn’t stop now.

My prediction:

Wu wins and becomes the Democratic candidate.

The Republicans then stand someone all of a sudden, figuring they have a chance because they have gone from trying to take down a local man with vast experience and understanding of his seat to opposing a mad banshee who pretends to ride a motorbike.

Wu then loses the actual election and wigs out on Twitter even more than usual, probably blaming Gamergate.

I like how this article basically says "Wu is running for reasons that are completely loony and incorrect"

Because that's the truth. To say otherwise would be FAKE NEWS.

I may very well be :late:, but the article has corrected the "mistake" of calling John transgender.
