Are you at the convention, @Kroster ?

I am surprised Brianna didn’t pretend to fall off her exercise bike again. Warren is also there. I wonder if the mysterious Dominique is attending.

Yes. I saw the Wus from afar but they're easy to avoid. I didn't see Warren, but I would have loved to. He was probably working the floor. The convention is basically a big networking event for party volunteers. Nobody has ever gotten a blow out for it. You have to get there are 8:30am too. Are we really supposed to believe that she woke up at 6:00 to go to a salon for a blow-out? Us mere mortals call that waking up and taking a shower.

There's a livestream of the convention here. https://www.facebook.com/MassDems/videos/1718911331480142/

I'm not entirely clear if Wu is allowed to speak or not. The info I can find tends to suggest that it's only candidates for statewide offices who speak, but currently Senator Warren is speaking, so maybe it's also federal candidates?

I hope Wu does speak. She's never, ever done any event like this before. Her usually rambling bullshit won't cut it.

There aren't really rules about who are allowed to speak. If there are, they're hazy. It's usually a mix of the most well known Democrats they can find, and a few hand-chosen rising stars introducing them. This was a nominating convention, so everyone running for state-wide office spoke, including Elizabeth Warren. The Senators usually come every 6 years, when they're running for reelection. I don't remember ever hearing a Representative speak. It's either never happened, or it wasn't memorable. There are 10 of them, each just running for their district, so it doesn't make sense to waste a speech on something 9/10 of the audience doesn't really care about. If any ever have spoken, it was probably because they were deemed a rising star and were giving an introduction to a state-wide candidate.

The convention is for the people really committed to the party. I think elected officials hate it and only begrudgingly come when it's their turn. It's where all the weirdos hang out. Warren is in his element. But Wu's too weird even for this crowd.

Yeah, real fucking interesting.

As it turns out... and I didn't know this... it turns out Lebanon ISN'T EVEN IN THE USA. Funny how some people have jobs to do and can't just go wherever they want.

This is tone deaf for anyone who looked up where Lynch was, and just pure idiocy for anyone who has ever been to a convention. There is no reason at all why Lynch would go to the state convention. He's not running for statewide office, and this isn't a campaign event for anyone not on the state wide ballot looking for a nomination. Lower-level politicians are welcome, and many set up tables to hand out swag, but this isn't something worth wasting his time on.

I suspect he'll become a perennial candidate, you know, that asshole who runs for every damn office every damn year.

Or he'll run for town meeting member, which is extremely easy to get elected to in basically every town. (This is not to be confused with selectmen/women, which is a legitimate office that people put effort into running for.) (Town meeting member is also the only elected office Jill Stein has ever held.) I mean, I do know someone who managed to fuck even that up in Arlington by being so incredibly irritating that people didn't re-elect him, but that's the exception.

Oh please. Wu doesn't even know that there is a town government. She has no interest in government, or how it works, and no curiosity about finding out. She just sees herself in charge of something.

Clearly you live in some county with a well-functioning government, and not one where positions are basically ways for washed up city councilors and other hack politicians to get as much state pension bucks as possible. We had a probate clerk punch someone once. Although I realize now that I think about it this requires people knowing who you are and voting on name recognition, and I doubt anyone in Norfolk County has heard of him.

Also, sorry if this is common knowledge, but is there a known reason he lives in Dedham? I keep thinking he lives in Somerville, which would make more sense. I can't imagine the appeal of Dedham--it's a very boring suburban town that's only 'liberal' in the sense that people are registered Democrats. I've seen a Confederate flag being flown there before.

They had to move somewhere in District 8 quickly. So they moved one town in. I'm guessing Frank wanted to keep his commute short, so they moved where it was convenient for him. As I said above, they have no idea that town governments exist, or that different towns have different political cultures. They are also VERY snobby, although they claim that Boston is snobby about them, so they would never move to the more suburban or rural towns.

The Dedham flag day parade is in two weeks; let's see if he shows up to that.

Wu only found out that towns have Democratic Committees in the past three months. You think she knows that towns have celebrations and events? As she's reading this post, she's practicing her 'I'm interested' face.

In which John wanders into the Off-topic section of Planet 9 and is *shocked* that people who can afford $100,000 sports cars are right-leaning in their politics.

'Posted on my i-Phone' is what makes that screed super funny.

The entire phenomenon of altconf seems weird to me. Imagine being so in awe of a company's marketing events that you set up what amounts to a glorified viewing party in the proximity of your idols and even having half-arsed tech sessions in facsimile of the event your attendees desperately wish they could afford to go to.

It's doubly weird that Wu goes every year. After that disaster of a VR talk nobody is ever going to invite her to speak again, and she doesn't seem to have any close friends she's hanging out with. The software engineering sessions mean absolutely nothing to her, so really it's just some weird annual salmon spawning urge to go back upstream to where Frank's money ends up.

Edit:

What event is she supposed to be doing this weekend, and did I miss the day in history when they covered the fifth reich? Was that the DDR?

The 5th Reich! I checked Twitter, and lots of people are joining in on the fun with this one. A middle school kid knows the facts better than Wu.

Enjoy some of the lulz here: https://mobile.twitter.com/mombot/status/1003508723954868224

Wasn't John a PoliSci major back in the day? This is the kind of thing that would have earned you an "F" in high school US History (inappropriateness of "Trump = Hitler" aside).

Franklin Roosevelt supported more aggressive measures against Hitler and Germany than what ended up getting past. Prior to Pearl Harbor, he might even have declared war on Germany and left Japan alone if he'd been a dictator. However, because we live in a democracy, he compromised to get support from isolationist and moderate members of Congress: Rather than ask for a declaration of war that would get voted down, he proposed, and passed, the "Lend-Lease" and "Cash and Carry" programs where the British could lease, and later purchase, warships from American shipyards. He got to support the war in Europe, his opponents got to say "we're not getting involved in Europe's war", and the Treasury got a sizeable payment to boot.

Ditto domestic policy/the New Deal: He compromised with moderates to get his programs passed and didn't try to override Congress/the Supreme Court when they shot him down and kept radical leftists like Huey Long and the Communist Party at arm's length. He also went along with segregation despite his personal opposition to it because it would have cost him votes in Southern states (which were reliably Democratic back then). It was not until 1948, the election after Roosevelt's death, that Democrats began to support civil rights, and they still reverted to segregationist VP candidates during the 50s.

Also, literally the paragraph after demanding that moderates/compromise be purged from the Democratic party, he.... whines about McCarthyism. The irony is fucking palpable.

At this point, I think idiots like Wu might be doing more to hurt the party than anything Trump/Ryan/McConnell have done.

To Wu, WDCC is like the cafeteria table in high school where all the cool kids sit. Johnny knows that he doesn't have the connections to get an invite, nor the skills and knowledge to have anything worth presenting. So he makes do by sitting as close as he can to the jocks and cheerleaders, then telling his other loser friends that he was "totally hanging out with Chad and Stacy".

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Comparing Trump to Hitler and McCarthy is giving him WAY too much credit. I'm hoping Johnny actually uses this in his speech, in the faint hope that someone asks him what he'll actually do to "impeach Trump".

Taking another look at the excerpt, it’s hilarious that she shared something so full of typos and weak ideas. Dunning Kruger strikes again.

That is a horrible speech. I sincerely hope he uses it because using hyperbole is a good idea when you’re trying to win over a group that’s highly educated. I bet he wrote it while on Ambien.

That’s a speech you write trying to win twitter prom king not a legitimate public office.

Brianna should take a cue from her idol, Hillary, and wander through the woods looking for lonely hikers to fake photo ops with.
Imagine coming across that when you're alone in the woods.

We'll think the resulting photos were with soyboys, but the truth is that they were all screaming.

Not only is the "Fifth Reich" astonishingly stupid, but there were never any race riots in Oxford, Miss. The so-called Battle of Oxford was between federal troops and white segregationists. No one except the ultra-ignorant Flynt/Wu has ever called it a race riot.

EDIT TO ADD:

Because Flynt/Wu attempts to justify his imbecilic moon rocks fantasy by citing Heinlein's "The Moon Is a Harsh Misstress," I wonder if he thinks the Fifth Reich was the Nazi moon colony in Heinlein's thoroughly researched and amazingly accurate historical novel "Rocket Ship Galileo."

She also says riots, plural. I’m willing to let the incorrect use of “race riot” slide since the catalyst was the desegregation of the university there, but she insists on turning everything into a “big fish”story. No bloodshed is good enough for Wu. Like any bad writer or presenter, she has to exaggerate to get the point across.
