If Wu is tweeting bullshit about cybersecurity instead of acknowledging the storm and how many people are suffering, she's even more tone deaf and stupid than I thought and that's saying a lot.
Brianna always finds new ways to lower your expectations of them. John doesn't give a shit about anything outside of his little bubble where he is the queen of futuretech and is totally the greatest, bestest woman ever.

One thing I find a bit disturbing about Wu is his OBSESSION with "tech". Especially "electronic" tech, to the exclusion of any other relatable concern.

Generally speaking, while it is an important aspect of the lives of most people in many countries, humanity does have other, more pressing concerns where that is not half as important, like finding a job in a non-tech centric area, putting food on the table, and generally finding ways to co-exist with our fellow man in a world racked with violence.

Technology is no replacement for manual labor, keeping people fed, and improving society and its ability to co-exist peacefully, and to Stephen Lynch's credit, I've seen his platform and his actions, and he understands people need jobs that don't require computers, they care more about feeding their families than Twitter hashtag bullshit, and he considers his constituents people, not pawns for his ego.

Most of this district isn't very techy either. West and North of the city more so. There isn't a ton of tech jobs down here, and a politician making tech jobs her platform is maybe like someone in rural Ohio making investment banking jobs their platform. Sure there are probably a few small firms, and it's part of the economic ecosystem, but overall nobody cares and it leaves you with the impression that the politician is confused and maybe lost.

I wonder how much of the obsession is fueled by John's success in scamming his way into being perceived as a someone in the tech scene. Going back and looking at his earlier works, he was not this autistically consumed by a love of "the technology" as he is now.

Usually people who think robots will substitute every job on earth don't work with AI, they don't know the countless limitations the technology has and the fact that it's almost impossible to predict where it will go.

Only because google released a toy that reconstructs images they literally believe tomorrow robots will be accountants and lawyers.

It's also easy to just snow normies over by saying shit like 'salting and hashing' and have them think you're smart. Doubly so if you actually believe you understand these things, and Wu completely thinks she does. She found out she can read a Wikipedia article and vomit out words that impress the kind of people who don't know what the cloud is.

48 hours earlier - "I was born to be a politician! I have been working political scene all my life! This is the easiest, best job I've ever had!"

Granted, I think this lie is closer to the truth than the stuff about how much he loves playing Candidate Wu. John likes some facets of this farce, like that initial surge of play money he received and being able to have his name out there in the news more. But he can feel that this doesn't have the longevity of his Game Designer Wu persona and it's probably beginning to hit him that people largely see him as a joke. Plus, maybe Frank is starting to tell him to get out there and do something like what happened with GSK at the end (before Frank just did everything himself because Brianna was starting to get into real trouble). I think Brianna has something in mind for what he wants to pretend to be next and wants this shit to be done so he can move on (while crying about institutionalized sexism since it's never his fault this fell apart).

Note the lack of explicit consideration of his future constituents. It's all about him.

This is slightly off topic, but there was an article in the last 2600 magazine written by a normie who had her home network thoroughly owned, and the travails of a non-techie trying to figure out how to deal with that situation. Half of it was a case of "yeah, that's definitely a symptom of your network being compromised to hell" and half of it was based on misunderstanding of data spewed out by tools she didn't quite understand, written by and for a technical audience. It was a timely reminder of how badly we in the software engineering community are failing to equip and inform the average user for the security challenges they now have to deal with on a daily basis considering everything in their home is now internet accessible.

Thinking about it, the fallout from Gamergate so nearly resulted in a useful contribution to solving this problem. Imagine a Crash Override Network that wasn't run by a lazy narcissist hell bent on seeking revenge on her perceived enemies over actually helping people. A crisis hotline for people suffering serious security problems is a worthy thing that probably should exist, and I'm sure an active and energetic leader could convince ISPs and the big software companies to help fund it. Likewise, imagine a parallel Brianna Wu who was charismatic but actually recognised she wasn't really a "woman in tech" and her knowledge was no better than the average tech pundit. It would be a good thing for there to be an advocate for personal security and criminal prosecution of computer offences in government, but someone like Wu really needs a circle of informed advisers who understand the problem and also can formulate a sensible legislative response.

Oh for fucks sake.

D. Erm, I think if we learned anything from Edward Snowden it's that the US government employs many excellent security researchers. It's just that their genius is bent towards exploiting security vulnerabilities, not getting them fixed.
Right, though I assume there are a fair number working on fixing vulnerabilities as well (at least the ones not deliberately built in as back doors).

The US likely already does spend billions on "Infosek," it's just that its farmed out to private contractors. Just because they're not direct government employees doesn't mean it's not happening. There's definitely something to be said against state/crony capitalism in that regard (though also the case for efficiency of private industry vs government in what should theoretically be lowest-bid contracts) and the military-intelligence complex, but that's obviously beyond Johns comprehension.

That blog post about Warren and Stephen being cousins never materialized. Does she even have a blog?
Wu did have a blog at one point, but has long since deleted it because of how much embarrassing shit was on there. Nowadays, Brianna prefers to lean on various connections to get his shitposting put on official blogs like the CNN website.

As for what happened to it, either Brianna is just too lazy/apathetic to do anything with it or said sources weren't about to risk starting shit with an elected representative based on the writings of two lunatics.

E. I totally agree, ENCRYPT EVERYTHING no matter how little sense it makes in context. You should start by encrypting all your tweets so nobody has to be exposed to your stupidity.

John should encrypt all his tweets with a one-time pad and then throw away the pad.

We just had the worst storm District 8 has had in my memory, with evacuations and flooding of areas that I've never seen flooded before. My Facebook feed has people who had to evacuate without their kids' medical equipment looking to borrow replacements, people trying to find places to stay when all the hotels are full, people wondering how many days before they have electricity again. There's an entire town in the district that has a travel ban, and nobody is allowed to leave their house. And there's expected to be one more high tide, in about three hours, that might be even higher than yesterday's.

If Wu is tweeting bullshit about cybersecurity instead of acknowledging the storm and how many people are suffering, she's even more tone deaf and stupid than I thought and that's saying a lot.
No, you don't understand! Wu can't possibly go out there and volunteer for a few hours and have a few press photos made, where she is carrying a single sandbag from one side to another. She has only a single outfit! It would be ruined! And what else would she then wear to her political play-pretends?

Wu is a sociopath, she won't start tweeting about that stuff until the waterline is in eye-shot of her house. And even then she would only tweet how scared and victimized she is, followed about something uneducated about climate change and that the flood is coming for her, because some GamerGaters have hacked Putin's Weather Dominator.
