Frank is the real lolcow in this thread. John is only a mentally ill person, almost a robot that acts with pure instincts. Frank is, sadly, rational, he did all this fully conscientious.

It's quite convenient for him to have such a perfect dumbass lightning rod like John. Screamface aside, Frank comes off as a normal dude provided that you never look beneath the surface or get distracted by his mega lolcow of a wife.

On a bit of an unrelated note, I sometimes wonder how John's life would have been if he had been found by the Internet around the same time as Chris. If a group like us had gotten to him before Frank, there's no telling how many fake Asian boyfriends John would have blown through.

Yes John, because nothing will aid those poor poor suffering overdose victims like a quick hit of an over the counter nonsteroidal anti inflammatory pain reliever! Well done trying to sound " smart"!

For the slow kids, or just John, Naproxen is what is commonly known as "Aleve". An over the counter pain med that you buy at Walmart. What John is trying to sound all knowledgeable and technical and Medical about is Naxalone, commonly called Narcan. The struggling Paramedics don't need wider access to Narcan John. Every one of them carries it and have done so since the 70's. Not that the struggling Paramedics don't appreciate wider access to Naproxen. They eat that stuff like M&M's. (See the Boogie2988 thread for why).

This is also one of those wonderful issues that shows just how ignorant John is while trying to show people how on top of current issues they are. Important stuff that they need to be in Congress to do! Like Kill people by wildly handing out random medication without any idea how it works. Hey John, Narcan is not like an Epipen. You need IV access to deliver it. Otherwise it is just sitting in muscle tissue doing nothing. Also all Narcan does is buy you time. It blocks the receptors that opiates such as Heroin bind to. Preventing the opiate from depressing systems such as breathing. But it's a fast in fast out med. it only lasts about 20 minutes or so. At which point the opiate is back in effect. It's to keep them breathing long enough to get them to a hospital. Not a magic "overdose mulligan" drug. Oh and if your junkie has been mixing meds? Say opiates and amphetamines or cocaine? Well it only counters the opiates... which have been depressing and reducing the effects of the uppers. Congratualations you just gave your junkie a heart attack! (And hope you did, otherwise you've just juiced up the Incredible Hulk! And he will come up swinging and biting every time!). Add to this that Narcan has a fairly short shelf life for a field use drug. Measured in months, not years. And it becomes less effective as it ages. EMS and ER's are constantly checking exp dates and rotating it out. So high maintenance in order to be effective.

So yeah there are reasons that they don't sell Narcan over the counter. There are reasons why they don't have it e erywhere like AED's. Because it takes both knowledge and professional skills to use safely. Not something you can get in a CPR course, let alone by simply reading the packaging.

Now Naproxen? Feel free to spread that around John. The worst you will do is long term Liver and Kidney damage, and Acid Reflux.

That can happen even without the amphetamines. He just went from high as hell (dying or not) to mad as hell. The guy may go straight from comatose and not breathing to hulk mode, run off, then go back into OD and die soon afterwards. Even without doing any more dope, which is probably what he's going to try to do. Dosing someone with this shit sounds like a nightmare.

Naloxone is nasty stuff. It also saves lives.

Not that John knows any of this. He's the kind of pussy who gets an Ambien habit. He's the kind of guy who would try to kill himself with a Valium overdose.

I hate being that 'actually' guy, but there's also a version (distributed to many cops and others who don't have a lot of medical training) that is a nasal spray and pretty damn easy to use. Works quick, too.

There's a lot more heroin than nerve gas floating around a lot of US areas. The question of making Narcan easier to get has a lot of parallels to needle exchanges. Which is to say I don't think Wu is completely off-base, although there are complications not being mentioned. You know, not off base except for the fact that he didn't spend enough time 'researching' this important topic to even figure out the right drug.

One difference is the easy availability of needles tends to attract junkies to that area and may encourage increased abuse, a tradeoff against limiting HIV spreading. The availability of an overdose treatment doesn't really do that. There are some concerns with needle exchanges, although they're mostly NIMBY concerns.
