Wasn’t Frank violent or otherwise abusive to his true and honest woman ex wife?

He could be a control freak, and paying for this transition and transformation would be a major way of controlling another person.
Especially because John is now somewhat dependent on further surgery and estrogen, at least to keep the illusion alive for himself.

I’d say troonism is often a manifestation of this as well. Some people develop anorexia because it’s a way of controlling the one thing in their life that they can, their body. Others develop troonism or in the case of people like frank, troonism by proxy.

That’s why depression is so common among them.
