It's all really simple, actually. Remember that when John first burst onto the scene via Gamergate, he was passing himself off as a natal white woman. Since he wanted to be part of Zoe Quinn's Kool Kidz Klub, that was not enough to gain access. Therefore - POOF! - John is suddenly "bi" now, so that he can say he's "queer" without revealing that he was born with a cock.

He's not first and certainly not the last "woman" to claim bisexuality in order get points on the Progressive Stack or garner male attention: see Tila Tequila, Megan Fox, and Nicki Minaj for celebrity examples, or LOLcows like Tess Holliday who continually claims to be KA-WEER but has never touched a snatch aside from her own because she wants attention and to not be just another Basic White Woman.

I read a book by a gay guy who grew up in the 70s, and he talked about how you would pick out a naïve homely girl and charm her mother that you're trust worthy, to basically get everyone off your back for awhile. It was probably really good practice for living a lie in a totally different way as an adult.
