Because that's what the US does when it comes up with emissions standards for passenger size vehicle diesel engines. They write the emissions standards for petrol engines presumably with input from people who know what they are talking about....and then those emissions standards also apply to diesel engines, because fuck you we can't be bothered despite the significant differences in operation between the two platforms.

In the EU, they write two separate sets of standards, one for petrol, and one for diesel, and the diesel standards as a result you have a snowballs chance in hell of complying with. Thus, diesel cars are far more common over there.

This rectal extraction based approach of diesel emissions in the USA has absolutely no bearing on the VW scandal no sir.

As a point of interest, the EU and US models that were equipped with defeat devices didn't pass either set of regulations, but failed EU regulations far less blatantly (shocking).

I was hungover once and watched almost the entirety of the previous episode of this show that Brianna was on and I could swear the main guy (don't know his name) was slyly taking the piss out of Wu the whole time. He brought up the whole George Takei running for congress thing and how he was glad he didn't retweet it (something, of course, Wu did), and then spent a bit of time discussing how weird it was that the new breastfeeding emoji was originally headless so as not to offend trans people.

Also Wu seemed surprisingly less confrontational and self-assured than usual. She even admitted she was wrong and that she had been duped by Takei's April Fool's joke.

Did anyone else notice this?

Oh my god, even for some weird CS niche topic, the topic of endianness has been settled for like 20 years. Intel won the CPU wars, and Intel went with Little Endian. Case closed.

Not to mention literally nobody needs to care about this anymore because everything has IDEs that handle this for you. Unless you're working with raw bytecode in Notepad++ (which you'd have to be a fucking retard masochist to do in tyool 2017) it doesn't matter at all whatsoever. You type in a number and it's converted to the appropriate endianness.

I know she's saying this to prove "how close to the metal" she gets when coding but in reality this is a CS 101 topic that nobody has to deal with nowadays unless they specifically want to for some autistic reason or they literally design CPUs for a living. Instead of proving how much she knows about computer engineering, she's doing the exact opposite.

I spend quite a lot of time writing code for which endianness is relevant, and let me tell you I really never bother making it big endian compatible. Intel is little endian, technically Arm and MIPS are both at least historically selectable endian, but for all practical purposes it's usually LE-32 and Mipsel. Sparc and Power were basically the last holdouts big endianness and they're both effectively dead.

If you really wanted to make a joke, you'd say that people who don't store their data middle endian are dead to you.

Well, the Internet is the last big holdout I guess, since TCP, IP, and all the rest are big-endian. Not that John (or most people) ever has much occasion to write their own IP packets.

I can't get over this.

The worst part of this is that once she realised she'd fucked up, she didn't just ignore the questions and try to pretend that the fuck up didn't happen or come out and admit she'd made an error. She has to double down on the bullshit, trying to pretend she's somehow right. The 486 is now in some unexplained way a step towards big endianness.

Why is she like this? Why is it so important for her to pretend to all this software engineering knowledge she clearly has no fucking clue about?
