The suggestion it's a scam to make money might be a projection of "what would make sense to us" onto somebody who is on another planet, "Why would I run a doomed-from-the-start Congressional campaign, if I were acting crazy and immoral". Screwing people for campaign funds would be a fine plan for a rational, if unethical, guy who reckons he can dodge the FEC.
Money doesn't seem like such a big motivator for Wu, as it's all paid for by Frank's magical money pit (his productive job). He seems more motivated by "being famous and important". He's proved that he values his facades more than he does money (i.e. Frank's and his parents' money).
Rev 60 was a monstrous financial bust (400 grand?) by the average man's standards, but now John can say he's a "game developer". Socially Unconscious was another five-figure implosion, but it made Flynt a "startup entrepreneur". His ten years of study made him a "journalist and programmer", again at a five-figure dead loss.
His reward, after a cost on the order of a cool million, is that he can playact at being those things on Twitter and in front of anybody who doesn't think / doesn't allow themselves to ask questions. By that ticket, Lolcow Wiki is edging closer to costing Flynt a million every time somebody new looks at those articles.

I don't think Frank makes a whole lot of money. Average for his career in his State is about $110k a year, but let's not forget he's been divorced twice and I believe has children with one of them? If he's paying alimony as well as child support that's a decent sum of cash taken away.
I for one believe he's making far less than $100k a year and probably around the ballpark of $56k to 64k a year. A decent sum sure, but not as much if he's paying out of his ass to other people as well as supporting Brianna's constant bullshit.

I think you (and everyone who speculates about where the hell they get the cash for all these frivolous purchases, from be-eyelashed motorcycles to every trendy videogame download on Steam) are missing the obvious possibility: John is not as cut off from his rich family as he claims to be.

I'm not saying it wouldn't make perfect sense for him to be cut off (no pun intended); I just don't trust anything that comes out of his mouth. Pretending to be outcast from his family is a great way to earn asspats and sweet, sweet Patreon bux.

Oh, do they live in squalor? I confess I don't really know much about their living conditions -- my speculation that he's still getting a lifeline from his no-doubt mortified family is as much speculation as anything. I just find it odd they own so much overpriced crap.
As for blowing a trust fund, that makes a whooooole lot of sense.

Oooh! This is something that I can actually answer to some extent!
As it was common knowledge, the Wu's once lived at 63 Moulton Road in Arlington, MA.
That house was a dead relatives house on Frank's side of the family and they were able to move into it, free of rent, as long as they kept the house in proper order and had some renovations done to bring it up to a more acceptable state.
It was over this past summer that I realized the pictures coming out of the Wu household were no longer the same house, as I'd been working on a floor plan for their home because reasons, so I looked into it further. Almost a year ago, at this point, the Wu's quietly left their home at 63 Moulton Road and hafve moved to an as of so far, unpublicized location, and its believed that they are renting that one after being kicked out/asked to leave the family house due to the terrible state that it had been reduced to.
They're in a significantly smaller, and cheaper house at this point, and it's not in their name, so it leads me to believe that its their 'safe' way of renting and avoiding 'gamergate' from tracking her down and killing her. Which is also why the mailing address/site registrats they currently have are for a PO Box nearby.
There is a reason that the Wu household bought a 15 year old car, they do not have the money to afford the luxury of something more expensive, despite the fact that they could easily sell Wu's 'ladycycle' for nearly full value once you rip those faggy eyelashes off of it, due to the fact that it HAS NOT BEEN RIDDEN more or less since it was purchased for 'street cred' purposes.
God only knows how much money Frank is sinking into getting BriBri all of these speaking engagements, hotel spaces, and not to mention the recent interviews.
There will come a point when Frank has burnt all of his bridges and he has no connections of his own remaining.

GSK was supposedly funded by Frank's savings. If you look at the concept just purely on paper, it might have worked. A sci-fi RPG on a platform starved for adequate games backed by Frank's connections in sci-fi could have worked or at least been a return on investment. The problem is Brianna. Her poor management, toxic attitude, and shitty ideas doomed it from inception.
I think based on what @Jaimas and others have said who spoke to Flynt's relatives the general consensus is that they'd rather have nothing to do with Brianna. She's a spoiled brat who would rather pretend to be disowned than act like an adult.

The "living in squalor" meme comes from the fact that there's dust all over Wus action figures, that her kitchen looks like a nightmare from her gross blue apron recipes and that for all the money they blow on electronics (I saw two Macs and an iPad Pro in her interview) they live like college frat kids.
