John used to despise other men, but now that you bring it up, it feels like he's softened on that stance. I always assumed it was some sort of self-hatred thing, but now I'm wondering if John was only a cunt towards men because he thought that's how women are supposed to act, because his knowledge of what girls do largely seems to come from stuff like Mean Girls. Maybe I've just filtered it out, but I can't really remember the last time Wu went on a "fuck the patriarchy" style rant or snapped at someone (male or otherwise) for mansplaining over one of the billions of subjects that John is an expert on.
His hatred towards men was more of a... "I'm better than you, you can't talk over me, I am the first to speak, what I say weighs heavier than what you say, it is up to me to interpret what you really said." As a troon he really tried to be the alpha-male that dominates other men.
I think he’s close, but no cigar. Transitioning is indeed purely a social thing. “Trans women are women” only if society accepts that they are. However, no definition of “functionally a woman” fits with this, because what that ultimately comes down to is “biologically female.”
And indeed, how he knows he is now mentally well. After all, he is not genuinely a woman - he’s a surgical and chemical approximation of one. It seems to me that he’s just being humoured in his delusion.

Perfect explanation. This is the underlying mindset that allows him to see the political expediency in preventing girls from transitioning. TERFs have long pointed out how much worse the optics are and I think on some level, John is able to understand this. His natural hostility towards women and girls allows him to reframe it as a concession without cost and a satisfying swipe at females.
