Back during the bisexual days, back before Wu learned what HSTS is and how she had to be one to be in the kool kids klub, Wu always used to say she'd had more relationships with women than men. It is interesting how her stories have evolved over time together with the motivation for them. Gonna stay private today and work on some deadlines. But, I was thinking about the detransitioner Tweet and wanted to add (WARNING) nuance over coffee.

There is a growing movement to tell trans people to toughen up and deal with unpleasant statements. This ranges from the reasonable, like being honest about our biology. To the gross, like gender criticals avalanching me with thousands of degrading, graphic comments about my vagina.

Ultimately, I think gender dysphoria is a very dangerous condition, and patients need to take more agency and personal responsibility in treatment.

So, why does that standard ONLY APPLY to trans people who are happy with their transition?

There is absolutely a political mission, led by the right, to amplify these stories with the subtext to end our healthcare. That doesn't mean we don't need to tell these stories - there's a lot of public policy that needs to be changed to reduce the number of detransitioners. And yes, this will mean more gatekeeping hoops for trans people to jump through getting care.

But if we need honest conversations, we need honest conversations. That cannot just apply to trans people happy with their transition.

My opinion, as someone who has had vaginoplasty, is the process of getting it is so cumbersome that an adult bears ALL RESPONSIBILITY if they regret it and the WPATH procedures were followed. Do people not know you have to have weeks of electrolysis to kill your pubic hair? That's spending thousands to have a stranger shock the hair on your genitals until it dies. It's awful. You have to have two letters from mental health professionals, one of which is a psychiatrist. You have to be on HRT for a year. And the consent process at the hospital is extremely lengthy - mine was actually videotaped and took an hour.

This requires a TON of thought and intention.

Furthermore, I know Fenway Health. It is a world class operation, with healthcare so good - I used to drive an hour into downtown Boston to get it. The stories being told about it only have one source, the detransitioner, and do not seem credible to me. I have so many friends that have transitioned there, and they ALL TELL ME THE OPPOSITE.

It seems to me that if we can say Lilytino is ridiculous, and she is - we can also say someone claiming to be a "detransitioner" while presenting like a drag queen is equally ridiculous. Ending up between genders is something a lot of trans people do. Sometimes people have unusual psychology and do not fit neatly into the boxes.

If the subtext of your media hits is, "These procedures are something ADULTS cannot consent to," I get to have feelings about that.

I have compassion for everyone suffering gender dysphoria, no matter where they end up. But if your political project is suggesting tough love for trans people, and absolving detransitioners of all personal agency - I don't agree that is the right framing
