Going by John's logic, if you rubbed a bowling ball with said mud, it would be legally fit for use in an MLB game.
He's also wrong in that the specific regulation, 4.0.1 (c), only states that the baseballs must be "properly rubbed so that the gloss is removed." In that regard, any suitable substance would suffice, it's just that they've been using this particular mud for so long because it's perfect for the job.
