It felt like such a no-brainer, but I had to check since I'm not familiar with the details surrounding adoption. But yes, not only is it generally illegal to accept payment for giving up your child for adoption, Virginia (where John was "adopted") specifically has statues on the books forbidding it. Birth mothers can receive financial assistance to help cover the costs surrounding adoption like food, rent, or medical bills, but that's quite different from explicitly getting paid for their baby.

So either John's parents were so insistent on adopting him that they were willing to break the law to pay for him, or John is a fucking retard and doesn't know shit about adoption. I dunno about you guys, but I'm going with the latter.

I guess this is just new lore how John kept grifting his parents to pay for him being at school. I'm guessing that around him heading towards his mid-20s, his parents started meekly wondering where his degree was and when he was going to finish. So he had to go to rehab, which made his parents give him some leeway. Then he started munching with shit like his hands not working to try and grift further money until his parents put their foot down and told him that he'd need to finish by the time was 30. He probably pulled the "I'm trans" card on them, but they were complete monsters and told him no, they wouldn't keep funding him.

He's very lucky he met Frank. I've always wondered how that timeline worked out in regards of him transing and his parents stopping the funding.
