Honestly I'm inclined to believe this is a rare instance of such a phenomenon, based on what we know of Johnny leading into college freshman year - he was a fat fucker who probably already had some extreme psychological issues. If he'd gone to some wealthy private institution then he'd have been crowing about it (unless admittedly if it was a boys-only institution because then the narrative falls apart).
