I don't even know what 'deadnaming' is, but since it's Brianna Wu we're talking about here, I'll bet money it's fucking stupid.
 
John is so dead set on finding someway to be offended, he keeps moving the goalposts:

Wu yet again being an idiot on something she should know more about. The singular they is exactly what you want to use as a gender neutral pronoun; it's especially useful if you aren't immediately sure of a person's gender. Dancing around using pronouns makes conversation stilted and awkward since you have to refer to the person by name at every reference. As a true and honest professional journalist and someone with a lot of experience in the trans community, you'd think she'd know these things.

Depends on your perspective -

Deadnaming

a) Referring to trans folk by their previous names/genders.

b) The practise of not submitting to Orwellian demands that one erases their own memory of (or history with) a trans person prior to their 'rebirth'.

Wu's probably just pissed that her family still refers to her as John Flynt, and this just struck a nerve.

And years of stalking the tumblr subforum have taught me that yes, gender fluid people do in fact prefer to be referred to as they. If you're gonna act like the champion of a group of people, you can at least fucking learn about them beforehand. Yknow, like a real journalist does.
