I like how John just went from saying FF Origins is being unfairly criticized because it has a shit story, but so do all Final Fantasies, so it's okay. Then saying Final Fantasy 8 is better than 7 because it is a love story. Or the implication that only women would appreciate that? There are tons of fanboys who argue over whether Cloud should be with Aeris or Tifa. Going back a game, FF6 is considered by many to be the best/most underappreciated Final Fantasy game despite having a female protagonist. I guess they are technically later entries (though not by much) but both 9 and 10 feature prominent romances and are fairly well received. Heck, I think a lot of modern day gamers would even list 10 as their favorite over 7. Also, saying a game released after another game has better cutscenes/graphics, while technically true, isn't really a valid argument because it should go without saying.

I think the real reason John has such a boner for FF8 is the card game, which gives him another chance to talk about how he constantly beats Frank. I'm actually surprised he's cool with FF origins, I haven't played it myself, but from everything I've seen it looked like, and I mean this in the best way possible, a very dude bro game. Lots of strong guys running around with giant weapons being dark and edgy with barely any female characters around. And given how heavily the story has been criticized, I can't imagine said female characters are pillars of strong writing. Which is fine by the way, looks like it was meant to be an action game and I've heard the gameplay is solid, but it seems like the typical "male power fantasy" style game that twitter users get up in arms about.

Or maybe the real issue is that the Junction system was a good idea that became a tiresome grind, and the story was a confusing mess that relied on a series of coincidences and the characters having collective amnesia, as well as the r3tarded decision to make levelling useless since it also makes THE ENEMIES LEVEL UP ACCORDINGLY.

Final Fantasy VIII reviewed almost as well as VII did, if you look at the Game Rankings aggregate it's lower but that includes lots of later reviews, if you just look at the ones of the time they're all like 9.5, 10, 95%, etc. The hype for it was nearly as high as VII got. A more appropriate explanation for the difference is probably that VII came first, it was more of a revolution, and by VIII people didn't want to have to watch every fucking spell cutscene in its entirety every time you cast them without being able to skip them. I don't actually recall many complaints I've ever seen about the story, other than the fact that nothing really happens on the first disc and it's really long and often boring.

VII remains a cultural touchstone because far more people have played it and more people are familiar with the basics of the story to where any gamer can recognize Cloud, knows what happens to Aeris, etc. The Gunblade is the most comparable thing from VIII probably, though Squall does alright for himself.

But sure, John, if only you had been there to review the game as a woman.

From what I remember of shitpost wars of the time:
Nothing in the first disk really mattered, the SeeD/Garden system didn't make sense to anyone who hadn't been through the Japanese education system, the gun blade was rediculous, Squall had no personality but all the girls on his junk, Seifer was diet pepsi to Sephiroth's Coke, Rinoa didn't make sense as a resistance leader, and for the ending/real story... shit I'll just let Wikipedia handle that
While Rinoa is being treated on Esthar's space station, Ultimecia uses her to free Adel from an orbital prison. Ultimecia then orders Seifer to activate the Lunatic Pandora facility, inciting a Lunar Cry that sends Adel's containment device to the planet.[28][29] Having selected Adel as her next host, Ultimecia abandons Rinoa in outer space. Squall rescues her, and they return to the planet on a derelict starship and share a romantic moment; Ellone is captured by Galbadia shortly thereafter. After landing, the party encounters Laguna, now President of Esthar;[30] he reveals Dr. Odine's plan to allow Ultimecia to cast time compression on their terms so that Ellone can send SeeD into Ultimecia's time period.[31] At Lunatic Pandora, Squall's team defeats Seifer, rescues Ellone, and kills Adel; Ultimecia possesses Rinoa and begins casting time compression.[32] Ellone sends Squall's team into Ultimecia's era, where she is defeated in a fierce battle before time compression can be fully achieved.

Did you follow that? Did it make sense? If so, consult your doctor you may have a brain tumor or adult onset schizophrenia.

The romance angle wasn't a problem at all, except that to make the love story happen they had to hamhandedly twist the plot so these two (initally) unlikeable losers were forced together. also because Quistis was clearly the superior choice

That doesn't include mechanical issues like the mandatory card game, enemies leveling up with you, summons being necessary in battle: and while you could turn off the full cut scene, it was still long enough to get really annoying after the 10th summon.

The story almost feels like something after the fact. The fact Sid and Edea were married and ran the orphanage they were all raised in, but Squalls dad was still alive but kinda just left him behind to rescue Ellone then decided "fuck it, I have no son." Or how Edea received her sorceress powers only to have squall, during the time compression event appear before Edea when she ran the orphange to tell her to make SeeD to defeat the sorceress, teaching her the salute, making it his own future being created by him.

The story is fucking dumb. The monsters leveling thing isn't so bad, and if you junction right, you never need to summon once. Except for fighting Bahamut and Ultima Weapon. Use Dumbtrain on them. I played a lot of FFVIII and the story has always been the worst part to me.

Also, there is the secret SeeDs that Edea created, just in case. That only exist for that.

At the end of the day it was so. fucking. boring. I remember almost nothing from it and my brain is trying to fill in the blanks so the girl is replaced by Tifa, no idea what the real character is called or looks like, some kind of Waka is also there and if you drag your feet during "work hours" and put in no effort you will still receive your salary. Makes sense, I think you work for the government.
 
It's ironic that she purports to call FF8 "women-centric". The game was directed and written by men, and FF7 always had a larger female fanbase. For millions of weeb girls it was their entry to RPGs in general and their shitty FF7 fanart and fanfics pollutted the web for the next decade.

Go to any fanfic archive or art website that accepts user submissions. Or even tumblr. There's 5x more works tagged as FF7 than FF8

God dammit, I almost agreed with this retarded troon until the last sentence. "ZERO cultural discussion of the ways male gamers had bias against women-centric themes." For fuck's sake, guys like what they like and women like what they like. It's even stated in the goddamn sentence that the game had "WOMEN-CENTRIC" themes. Why can't this guy just 52% already? He's long overdue after failing at both game development and running for Congress.

I think there's also a big difference in the quality of writing for female characters between the game. And given that FF8 is a little more stereotypical with their portrayal of female characters, I can see why John prefers it. In FF8, the female characters tend to be more damsels in distress or manic pixie dreamgirls. In FF7, they don't really fall into any gender tropes. They have some love interest stuff, sure, but it doesn't fully define their character. They feel like full fledged party members. In FF8, it feels like they largely exists as plot devices, usually to give the male main character a chance to rush in and save the day, then talk about how awesome said character is. Quistis, who you'd think would be a strong independent character, loses her job just so she can travel with the main character. Rinoa spends the majority of the game needing the main character to fight her battles and rescue her. Selphie has agency in one mission where her home is about to be bombed, but other than that she's just "quirky" and mostly exists so one of the male party members has someone to flirt with. Edea is literally the mother character once she isn't possessed, to the point her name is displayed as Matron in the flashbacks. The main villain is female so I guess that's something, but she's a pretty two dimensional "destroy the world" character.
