Etymologist John is always entertaining. The use of the word cracker to describe poor, uneducated whites in the South dates to at least the 1780s. So John is only off by 200 years.
 
I have vietnam flashbacks of a colleague in grad school trying to get her stupid FPGA to work for months on end and try not to get dropped from the phd program.
It looked fun in the same way cutting off your balls looks fun, which I guess explains why john is so excited about the prospect lmao

I have... not even toe-dipped but did the "I'm not touching you!" with FPGAs. There's a fucking skill mountain before you start getting good but once you do, you can do some incredibly cool shit as you are turning your program into hardware so it runs as fast as physically possible. And if your FPGA works like you want, you can turn it into silicon for cheap mass production.
What kept me from getting into them was the tools needed weren't particularly cheap, FPGAs weren't cheap, and apparently you can lock yourself out and more-or-less brick your pricey FPGA if you upload the wrong diagram.

My real guess, being I don't know anything about thier hardware other than there are two FPGAs, is they might be hoping for the ability to sync them up for 32-bit support in the future.
 
For the curious:
Analogue (not to be confused with the Magazine that features screaming chinks) is a emulator retro console creator. If you try to read through their bullshit, they have retroconsoles with FPGAs in them. An FPGA stands for Field Programable Gate Array - it is a hardware chip you can change the function of the transitors via software ('program it in the field' vs in the lab with equioment). This lets you exactly (or nearly so) recreate console hardware.
This is pretty flippin' cool,if extremely pretentiously autistic.

Their latest product (that john is jizzing his pants about) is a hand-held that can do OG Gameboy to Gameboy advance games, as well as Lynx, Gamegear, and Neogeo; any console 16bit or less is an option it looks like. It plays actual cartridges, and doesn't need BIOS files because They reverse engineered the GB bioses onto their custom hardware.
So yes, if you get a ROM cart, the ROMs should play almost exactly like native. They also support per-game FPGA tweaks - which is where they get a little fucky because again, its not an EMU or ROM dump. They mention down deep in the text you need carts to play,but they definitely are trying to give the impression all the games are included.

Its overpriced and a little Up-its-own-ass, but they include two FPGAs, one for Dev work - which if they have brick protections in place that'd be a fun (if overpriced) little 16-bit FPGA hacking platform.
Its pretty neat, but for John its just a toy to wank about having and then toss into its protective case and forget all about.
I hadn't heard about FPGAs in general, let alone for emulation use, until LGR's recent vid on the MiSTer project and the Multisystem motherboard that's designed to make it easier to use. It's fascinating to me and far above my pay grade to even begin to dive into seriously, but I can't help but appreciate the dedicated autism involved at bringing about such accurate emulation solutions, especially for arcade boards and obscure hardware. Analogue looks to be aiming more towards the consumer than hobbyist end of the spectrum (unlike MiSTer which requires at least a little know-how), and their products certainly look nice, albeit a bit pricey for my taste.

That said, I can absolutely guarantee John will not be doing any development with his kits. It's just another attempt to shore up his hacker gurl persona, and as you said, it'll quickly be left to rot like all his other tech toys. Five hundred of Frank's bucks well-spent, I'm sure.

The MiSTer is really interesting because it is the last, best hope for keeping old pre-Windows 95 games & peripherals alive since they are trying to recreate a 90HMz x86 on the FPGAs.

anyway, Software Engineer Miss'ippi John should be jizzing himself about that one, and the ability to fully hack it. Buthe isn't because John is a fucking poser & massive tool, and anything more complex than a "follow this, can't fail" youtube is beyond his abilities.

Like I said, each is going for a different market. The MiSTer project is for hobbyists and retro gaming preservation, with plenty of people contributing to developing new cores for a massive variety of systems. You have to have a bit of hardware and software knowledge to get it up and running, acquire some daughter boards (or the Multisystem in that video) to supply the necessary ports, and download some ROMs for your use. Analogue's hardware products are for the consumer that wants to be able to play their retro games without having to fuss around with old hardware, adapters, and the like. Just plug it into your TV, pop in your old cartridges, and start playing. The additional FPGA on the Pocket is more of an added bonus for tinkerers than the primary purpose of the product.

I'd love to see John attempt to get the MiSTer set up and playing games. Godzilla of tech feminism would probably end up shorting out the board somehow.

Analogue makes quality stuff. Prior to going the FPGA route, they used original hardware for their offerings (Neo Geo and their first runs of the NT (NES)). Even when they made the switch to FPGA they'd still use some original components (controller ports). Build quality is also a cut or twelve above anything else available on the market. The issue with offering a premium build and original hardware combined with aiming for a pretty small market is that their pricing is really expensive. Moving to FPGA gave them more flexibility in this regard while still offering as close to an authentic experience short of original hardware. It's also why the moved to plastics for their SNES, Gensis, Turbo Duo (not sure that one is out yet) and of course the pocket. Even still the build quality on those systems is great. Those changes have let them go from a $649 Neo Geo and $499 NES to offering products (SNES, Genesis, Pocket) at $199. While that's still pretty expensive, I wouldn't consider it terrible due to the economy of scale given the limited audience for the product. I also doubt most Analogue owners do much tinkering with their systems beyond downloading the day one firmware that runs off the SD Card and allows games to load from that SD Card. Kevin Horton, assuming he's still with them, usually releases that on GitHub as well as custom cores to support other hardware.

MiSTer has definitely garnered more of a tinkerer audience and is probably a more economical all-in-one solution but some people do care about playing on original carts.

The additional FPGA on the Pocket is more of an added bonus for tinkerers than the primary purpose of the product.

Now granted my knowledge might be well out of date, but a FPGA is a hell of thing to toss in "just because". It'd up the cost of the unit by $30-80. But maybe it its one of those things where once you add one, the next one is only a couple of bucks. Anyway, probably not worth talking about.

The stupid continues when you stop to wonder why someone who's "triple vaccinated" and wears "upgraded" masks gives a shit about the coof anymore. I thought that once you got vaccine immunity that you'd never have to worry about getting sick again. Why are you still avoiding crowds, John? Don't you trust The Science?
