More than ever I think that the ability to lie without compunction is a sort of social super power. Think how few people ever question Wu's self report of her job and social standing despite the fact there's basically nothing you can point to to back it up.

Oh, you have a job? Doing what? Oh, you're making good money? Who's paying you? You're helping to change public policy? How?
I suppose ultimately Wu has absolutely nothing to lose by lying which I guess is the difference to normal people. What's going to happen, she might be shunned by her many, very real friends? There's always going to be the Bank of Frank to fall back on, so might as well lie until it hurts.
