Remember that John is much older than your typical Twitter commie. He wasn't raised on a diet of moronic hot takes and internet jihads, he came by those opportunistically as a second language. In his heart of hearts he's always been a sort of centrist '90s Republican. Just look at "Election Eve" - the platform of the heroic president character (who John's self-insert interns for) is to unite the country with a bipartisan government.
Situations like this are when I almost ALMOST feel bad for him. Whenever someone on the left tries to find some common ground with their opponents, or at least try temper the anger of other leftists, they get attacked like Brianna just did. They've got two options: double down on the approved ideology and back-peddle hard on your heretical thoughts or resist and face potential exile. Brianna is much too big of a coward to ever do the latter, so she's really got no choice but to scurry back into the fold with her tale between her legs. After all, no one wants to be an apostate...
