I honestly believe that losing his parents as a cash cow severely hurt John.

For a long time, John has claimed he was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Flynt of Mississippi. But all the evidence points to Mr. and Mrs. Flynt being his biological parents, and the false claim of adopted status is just used to score extra oppression points and cover for the fact that Mr. and Mrs. Flynt disowned John when he turned troon. To cover his tracks, John says that his (fake) biological mother anonymously dropped him off as an infant at a church orphanage and that's why there's no record of his real biological parents, but it's another lazy lie, since they don't do anonymous foundling drop offs any more.
 
John also looks like his biological dad.
He’s claimed he’s adopted but like all of his lies, it falls apart under even the most cursory of glances.

Correction - John's parents didn't cut him off for going troon. After John got out of rehab, the Flynts basically told him to grow up and get his shit together as they weren't going to just keep financing his every whim. John threw a hissy fit and left them of his own volition.

So yeah, the truth is far more autistic than simply going troon. John's parents might have continued to enable their shithead son if he could even bother to put forth the slightest effort but that was too much for Brianna.

Also burning hundreds of thousands of dollars of your adoptive parents money on an idiotic venture is even worse, if you ask me.

This isn't quite true.

The order of events is:

  • John drops out of his engineering course at Ole Miss and enrolls in a business course at Milsaps
  • John drops out of Milsaps to start an animation company on his parents' dime.
  • Animation company goes titsup, John's parents buy him an apartment in DC where he was or most likely was not employed in some low level politics-adjacent job (Wu says "fundraising" when she supplies any details at all.)
  • John's parents drag him home from DC and check him in to an expensive private clinic to treat his drug problem.
  • John mooches around for a bit, and then re-enrolls at Ole Miss, this time as Journalism major.
  • John has a bust up with his parents, either because he announced to them he was a tranny or because he needed yet another year at Ole Miss to get a degree. Either way, they stop paying for him and he goes to live with his aunt in Colorado.

but she got fridged, John. she only existed to get fridged. (that is the Anitaboo term for it, right?) also David Mack sucks and if you're going to read a Discovery-related Star Trek novel you should be reading John M. Ford's The Final Reflection. except you can't read and there probably isn't an audiobook.

and the actual captain for the show is a fucking white male.

It's October, which means FEC reporting time! Sometime in the next couple of weeks lulz will be had.

I'm particularly looking forward to this quarter, 'cos Wu said on this podcast that she had set herself the goal of raising a million dollars in those three months. I'm sure the sheer scale of her dismal failure will be impressive. There's also the matter of her supposed "office", the Star Wars and the Star Trek fundraisers to be resolved. It's going to be endless fun.

Pretty much. We'll get to see how many tickets she sold for her Star Wars thing, which I'm guessing is under 20. Apparently she did some cold calling this quarter after that women in politics training course told her to, but I don't imagine Wu's rolodex is all that large. The one person she said she called on twitter was the guy who played Frank in the SyFy "the internet ruined my life" shlockudrama thing. I found out that the guy was a recovering drug addict and wannabe male model who was clearly hired for about 20 quid and pack of peanuts, so I can see how that call went.
