I know nothing about ayyteam, but I think the connection is more than likely false. I'd expect there to be way more creative anti-Flynt stuff on the chans if someone was working for 30$ an hour, or at least more organized/newsworthy trolling attempts. That being said, I could imagine Wu being as wealthy/lazy as she is thinking that registering a twitter account & calling her a tranny/making a shitty death threat is worth around 30$/hr. At least according to the invoice it reads "30" in quantity. If she seriously paid that much for 30 "untraceable" death threats that may be a new low.

So this is huge, and happened today. Take with massive salt.

Do you guys remember the Ayyteam? They were a group of third-party trolls, associated with Lizard Squad, that were actively performing subversion ops against Gamergate on 8chan and trying to undermine its overall progress. Well, a revelation just became known via Twitter user @mombot: Wu is paying them to be mean to her on twitter so she can report them for harassment:

Kiwis, this information must be investigated and confirmed or denied post-haste.

Guys, this is an invoice *from* Brianna. See how the bill to: is blacked out? This is probably an invoice for ad placement on one of her podcasts. This even looks like it's generated from Harvest, which some of the 5by5 people use.

Brianna Wu talking about 'better design' is like The Great Gonzo talking about how to play the trumpet.

It's subjectively better design. It works for some people, while others prefer to be let loose, make mistakes, and learn from trial and error. That's one of the good things about gaming, like many other forms of long-lived media, there's a lot of options. Wu wants a world where games conform to her idea of proper design, where games cater to her gender beliefs, her sensibilities. In short, she wants gaming as a whole to be like her Twitter feed, a hugbox she has complete control over.

That doesn't only wreck the artistic merit that could be found in games, it will also stagnate the industry from a gameplay perspective and force people seek other avenues to make the things they want to make, or force them out of work entirely. Generalized statements like that are as contradictory as someone saying: "Only hardcore games should exist".

I honestly feel like there is too much objectification of women in gaming, and a serious under-representation of women in certain genres of gaming. That said, I want them to have an advocate that isn't a known scam artist, whose idea of gaining fame relies on milking pity and drama that they created in the first place. I sincerely hope this is true, because Wu may discover time travel from the sheer speed of the backpedaling.

Normally you'd be right but after she discovered she made the thread from her gamedev account, she quickly deleted it and re-posted it minutes later, word for word, from a sock account. She really is that dumb.

edit: I can't find any corroborating evidence other than my booze addled brain so for the moment, consider this the ramblings of a drunk.
Do we have a screen grab of that other thread?

We heard from her former employee that she did it on purpose to generate rage.

I think it would be blacked out regardless. But, yes, when you see "Giant Space Kat" on the invoice, that means that GSK is billing someone for money because GSK wants to get paid.

I agree. However we shouldn't forget that probably the main intention behind that tweet was to spur controversy and gain more exposure. It is one step away from claiming that Super Mario Bros is a piece of shit.

And it has nothing to do that casuals don't have time to get invested into a +20h long story on their iPad or whatever. Or that they don't have time to learn all the nuances of LoL...

What Wu is tweeting here, is a serious case of "lowing the standards" so her own game looks better in comparison.

This has got to be a thinly veiled money-laundering scheme. I refuse to believe anyone would honestly pay $1000 for any amount of advertising on Wu's media.

She has close to 50k followers on twitter. I would believe that. I also believe that the recent tweets about that "Soylent" drink were also paid for and shameless plugs. I bet she never touched that stuff.

Well yes, but I think everyone knows those followers are mostly people who'd never buy anything she endorsed. That and paid bots.

And why don't you believe Brianna likes a drink made for and by insufferable self-important white male tech douches?
Because no one who tries to maintain any form of public image suddenly pops out a bunch of tweets how they like PRODUCT NAME without getting paid for that. I bet that Wu will never mention this drink again.

Nobody would pay Wu to associate their product with such a shitty person. I won't believe it unless I see it.

It's more of a personal jihad for the dude who created it than an attempt to start a money making empire, and it's barely marketed in normal ways.

Doesn't matter, even if Wu suddenly falls from grace Wu isn't associated with that product. She just advertised it in a manner that implied that she liked it. You don't stop buying your favorite Coke just because Charles Manson likes it too, right?

Also, believe me, when you have this much Followers, you get such offers.

Gamers in general - from Facebook-gaming Social Media-ites to Hardcore Dungeon Crawling assholes like myself - don't like being treated like retards, Wu, and they resent being talked down to. Idiocy like overtutorialization are things everyone with half a brain despises. There's a fucking world of difference between a few optional "THIS IS HERE TO GIVE YOU ADVICE IF NEEDED" things (see: Dark Souls' early messages in the Undead Asylum), and what people rightly call "hand holding."

Examples of excellent tutorialization:
* Metroid (Aside from Other M - usually done via level design)
* Megaman (Specifically Classic and X Series except X6 and X7 - also usually done via level design)
* Shantae (Also done via level design)
* Super Mario Bros (NES version does this just fine, being the quintessential platformer)
* Dark Souls (opening area explains general combat terms and essentially walkthroughs you past the first area without any overt hand-holding)
* Bloodborne (Offers tips in the Hunter's Dream for newblets, but essentially mandates that the player learn via brilliantly-deployed in-game mechanics)
* Etrian Odyssey (Early missions explain the importance of the map system and basic item usage, typically without forcing you into it)
* Silent Hill (All the core games other than SH4 (which takes a different approach) gradually lead you in with mechanics, weapons, and environmental interactivity)

Examples of good tutorialization:
* Destiny (Comes quite close to correct, but fucks it up with mandated hints. Other than this, good; gradual lead-ins during first quest, gradual arsenal building)
* Giana Sisters (levels have signs with pictures that generally explain what shit does)
* Castlevania's DS Releases (Generally gradual lead-in; not quite as elegant as Metroid or Megaman but often much more complex)
* Helldivers (Tutorial Level, but the game is complicated)
* Dragon Ball Xenoverse (Tutorial Levels that are rather fluffy and make sense)
* Deadly Premonition (Intro level. Mandatory tutorials but not obnoxious)
* Transformers: Fall of Cybertron (Intro level has you learning the mechanics, hilariously, as recovering from being blasted through a wall)
* Perfect Dark (CI lets you acclimate to the controls and weapons)
* Parasite Eve 2 (MIST area helps you learn the combat system - FOR PRIZES NO LESS)
* Super Mario RPG (to say anything merely detracts from the humor of the intro stage)

Examples of average tutorialization:
* Gears of War Series (Intro areas of Gears 1-2 so players can "work out the kinks" or "break in the rook")
* Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Excellent lead-in, but only after the intro sequence with Richter)
* Starbound (Mandated progression quests)
* Dawn of War 2: Retribution (Tutorial Level)
* Mass Effect Series (Tutorial Levels all around)
* Splinter Cell: Conviction and Blacklist (Tutorial Levels)

Examples of bad tutorialization:
* Revolution 60 (forced hand-holding THIS IS HOW YOU PLAY segment, unskippable, fucking new players)
* Every fucking David Cage game ever (same)
* Alone in the Dark (2009) (SAME)
* Silent Hill Downpour (FUCKING SAME)
* Etrian Mystery Dungeon (Fucking hand-holding "you need this, you're a retard" intro dungeon that pisses off every series veteran; mandatory and cannot be bypassed; classes players actually want withheld until you make progress)
* Pokemon in general (10-30 MINUTES BEFORE WE CAN GET DONE WITH FAFFING AROUND AND PLAY THE FUCKING GAME. Thank you X/Y for breaking the mold)
* Megaman X6 (HERE IS INFORMATION ABOUT THE LEVEL AND STUFF IN IT. UNAVOIDABLY. WHILE WE EXPLAIN NOTHING OF HOW THE NIGHTMARE PHENOMENON WORKS. ASSHOLE)

Examples of Horrid tutorialization:
* Megaman X7 (CAN YOU HEAR ME? ZERO?)

Examples of Apocalypse-Tier tutorialization:
* Far Cry: Blood Dragon (DONE INTENTIONALLY)

Okay, I have to comment on this one because her analogy is so mind-blowingly stupid.

Firstly, asking what if Marvel movies where made for hardcore comic fans just makes no sense for the point she's trying to make. Marvel movies are made for casual MOVIE watchers. Marvel comics themselves are largely inaccessible to newbies except for special titles (and I do understand that they're currently attempting a "reset", or something).

The movie as a medium does itself have films that can be (very loosely) grouped into movies that are aimed at "casuals" (summer blockbusters, rom-coms) and "hardcore" viewers (arthouse and experimental films). If you're the kind of person who only watches summer blockbusters, you are NOT likely to get a lot of mileage out of a movie like King Ubu, for instance. And you don't have to. But what you SHOULDN'T do is complain that the filmmaker is not directly appealing to your tastes and sensibilities!

So John's entire thing about being upset about the "split" between casual and hardcore gamers is totally worthless. AAA games are deliberately complicated because they are sold to people who are intimately familiar with games and want an immersive and complex experience. Mobile games are deliberately simple because they are sold to people who just want to distract themselves for a few minutes before moving on. That's exactly the difference between A Woman is a Woman and Jurassic Park. Both are good movies but the audiences are largely separate, though of course there's plenty of stuff that falls somewhere in between. Attempting to make one more like the other would be insane. That's John in a nutshell.

if your design is good you don't need tutorials you can do it in the actual game play. much of the crap that is in games now is due to it being cheaper then printing manuals

"So, @refinery29 ran a story about the background of the woman who wrote the Barbie book. Interesting, and I'm quoted!"

"I’m quoted in this piece from @Refinery29 about productivity apps!"

Good that you're chums with the women at Refinery29, John.

Here's a photo of them:

Here is how they describe themselves:
"we strive to make Refinery29 the number-one destination for stylish, intelligent women who crave thought-provoking conversation around limitless ideas"

That's wonderful. Now what stylish, intelligent, confident, diverse, empowered women run this company?

Philippe Von Borries, CEO (white male)
Justin Stefano, CEO (white male)

Thanks for the updates, John (white male).
