Main guy writing the Brianna Wu article and its attached sub-articles for lolcow wiki here.
First, let me say I have nothing but respect for you. What you did showed more bravery and integrity than many, and that's not something I say lightly.
That said.
I want to make clear the reason we chronicle Wu (especially on lolcow wiki). Before I can do that, here's a breakdown:
Wu's involvement with Gamergate is almost entirely prevaricated on a series of lies and fabrications. She claims to be harassed because of widely-debunked hoaxes and things she herself made up (See: Operation FalseFag II or Jace in general), and lies so easily and so often it's genuinely easier to pick out when she tells the truth than when she does not. She also is constantly inflammatory to stir up controversy, and is essentially a case-study in everything about corruption in games journalism (seriously, 97% of glowing articles
Revolution 60 has recieved are from people Wu
personally knows). She is enabled by a horde of despicable people whom act as a private army enabling her to harass, threaten, and attack people without consequence, give her money, and hang on her every word. She shrieks constantly about privilege (whilst being fucking
ridiculously wealthy), and claims to constantly have a history, education, and credentials she does not. The most horrible aspect of Wu is that she thinks nothing of using her army and connections to
ruin someone's life if she thinks it suits her. The Tim Hunt scandal (which Wu was involved with) is a good example, but I've had personal conversations with people who know Wu IRL - and who've said that if Wu feels you're an enemy, she will do everything and then some, no matter how foul, to bring ruin to you.
She is unlikely to ever be called to task for any of these. Hell, you
lived it. I'd relish the chance to hear from you your own experiences on the subject, but I'm fairly certain it only mirrors what we've already heard and seen. You're not the first one to have the cult unleashed on you, and as we saw from Twitter earlier today, won't be the last.
In a vacuum, Brianna comes across as just one more horrible person on the interbutts, but to a lolcow chronicleer, she's a
fascinating case-study. In Wu's analysis, one sees shades of almost
every lolcow we've ever covered, from our dear CWC (Brianna is often, correctly, described as Chris with a budget), to Vade (cult leader with delusions of grandeur, though unlike Wu Vade actually has a
body count), to Andrew Dobson and back again. It's like every single worst trait of multiple lolcows congealed and formed into that which we now call Brianna Wu.
And in that regard, lolcow wiki does its job. It seeks to be as informative as possible about truly despicable people, of whom Wu is definitely one of them. Wu's article has been a monumental undertaking and it's taken me significantly longer than even Vade's article to even crack the surface.
I work
damn hard to establish an NPOV on these articles, and with the likes of Wu, this is almost never easy, as she is someone who is an absolutely terrible person, a gigantic egomaniac, and who believes wholeheartedly that she alone should get to make the rules, and what is and is not relevant. And in this regard, what lolcow wiki does is essential. When the wiki helped bring about Vade's downfall, it did more than just bring a lolcow to the public light, it dragged Vade, kicking and screaming, into a place where the rules of her personal hugbox did not apply. A land where her actions would be held to account, and no amount of her usual tactics of blaming and shaming would save her ass. For the first time, it made people aware of who she was, what she was, and why.
And that's why I feel what we do here is so important. Yes, admittedly, a lot of us are watching because Wu's chimp-outs and fails are hilarious to watch, but under it, spreading awareness is ultimately Wu's kryptonite. Look up Brianna Wu on google and you have about three pages of shit extolling her before even a
hint of criticism starts, the bulk of which are articles written or covered by friends and associates of hers. Almost all of them cover things Wu is openly fucking lying about. Remember the time she was forced from her home?
That was over a fucking Something Awful hoax, was widely known to be a hoax literally hours after the account got banned, Something Awful took credit for it, and Wu still fucking claimed legitimacy! And we know she never left her home, either!
So with this in mind, noble Geth, I must respectfully disagree. Wu needs to be taken down a peg - not by means of threats or insults, but by the simple process of chronicling her actions and letting them stand so others may view them. If people get laughs out of her spergier moments, more power to them, but awareness is invariably my goal when I do articles.
