To get ridiculously off-topic for a moment: I blame George W. Bush.

George Bush was such an awful president that he inspired an unprecedented level of bile in the left. The right had no earthly idea where all this hate was coming from, because they were blind to the kind of shit Bush was up to, so they saw it as sour grapes. They all came to a silent understanding that, no matter who it was, they would have a complete nuclear meltdown over the next Democrat president. Then it turned out to be a black guy and and they got the racist bump.

So now we have the world these kids were growing up in: the dumbest, most repugnant shit-heel contingent of the right is screeching about magical nonsense and flinging shit at the wall as some kind of twisted revenge for the left hating Bush, and with a dash of racism that they completely refuse to acknowledge. For a little while during this mess progressivism was able to keep their shit together and was the voice reason in a political discourse notable for being full of right-wingers taking massive dumps everywhere out of spite. This is what SJW's think they're doing, or at least it's what they're aping.

Slowly but surely progressives got very sure of themselves. If your primary ideological opponents are always really stupid and make really dumb counter arguments you start to believe that your own shit doesn't stink. Without any kind of reasonable opposition to refute their dumber points they disappear further and further up their own asses. They finally emerged from this anal singularity as SJWs.

So it was the emergence of the new "dumbass-style" conservatism in the US that is what caused the new "dumbass-style" progressivism in academia.

Before Bush there was Weather Underground and the Symbionese Liberation Front, progressive groups that ran around with assault rifles, literally and actually terrorist-bombing people and kidnapping heiresses. SJWs are pretty stupid but nothing compared to those guys. Before that you've got your radical red armies, anarchist-bomb throwers, the abolitionist jayhawkers who would break into homes to torture and skin alive slaveowners and their children. My post was about the exact, specific form of "progressive extremism" (I really would not characterize SJWs as "extremists" so much as they are "complete idiots"). I still stand by it. There isn't some magical pendulum swinging around in the luminiferous aether that determines the "eb and flow" of the political landscape. Movements start because of things that happen. The momentum that causes these shifts comes from what's happening in the society that births them. These people are the result of their political environment, and they grew up in the political environment of the post-Bush backlash.
