Holy shit, Wu's a goddamn moron.
Anyone ever heard of the game kkhrieger? It was a proof of concept game where they managed to make a game that looks like a low res version of Doom 3 that still looks miles above in quality over R60.
The real genius is that it included hardware transform and lighting, decently detailed textures, a fair sized amount of gameplay content and rudimentary physics.........AND THEY MANAGED TO COMPRESS ALL THIS INTO A FILE LESS THAN 100KB IN SIZE.
The pathetic part is that this POC game managed to do most if not all of what R60 does MUCH BETTER, and while shorter in terms of overall content, it's much more fun.
Edit: Been reading through that article, and damn, Wu knows fuck all about how to use graphics emulation tricks to overcome limitations.
The glass shards could have been very low res 2D images given a transparency overlay to give them a 3D look with a few repeating frames and simple light map to disguise how cheap it was.
Specular maps could have been convincingly faked using similar graphics tricks if you just can't do it for real, though you could probably do some low res real versions on the cheap for a portable system.
Also, transparency is not optimized...my ass. Just depends on how you use the technique and how well you scale it to the task at hand.
I haven't dicked around with Unreal too much, but I do know the facial animation issue sounds more like Wu can't optimize worth a damn and less like engine limitations.
