I'm actually amazed that Wu has admitted to such a failure, even if they've distanced their own name from it. Is this to gain sympathy from the Kickstarter backers which have been ignored?

Actually, there was a lot of people who bought into the hype. The game had a lot of good ideas going in and wasn't expressly doomed from the start. Brianna Wu ensured it was, of course, but it certainly didn't start that way, and when Wu promised an upgraded, uprated version for home platforms with all kinds of new content, the people who liked the original (few as they were) and the people bamboozled into helping her due to her earlier presentations and the marketing blitz behind it got on-board with the game.
It's like the Tropes vs. Women Kickstarter, but even less competent.

Unfortunately, all this will do is just force Wu to keep posting siezure-inducing rave pictures again. I haven't read the fine print yet, but unfortunately I get the impression just posting static pictures is enough to save Wu's ass.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but Anita Sarkeesian gave much more of a fuck about that or at least was much better at giving the illusion she cared. She even produced much more than Wu has ever brought to the table and has a lot less people pissed off at her even now.
Sarkeesian is a genius compared to Wu, and while I bet John is reluctant to admit it, he's gotta be pissed how his inept attempt at aping Anita has backfired so badly.

I'm not sure at this point if it's proverbial balls to be honest.
To make a tortured hockey analogy, it seems like Brianna is a player who has realized during a playoff series that they can get away with all the penalties because the refs have "put the whistles in their pockets" and thus none of it is get called despite the vocal protestations of the crowd and other players. Nobody in his tiny audience (in this analogy, only the refs) ever calls him on his shit, so he just assumes he can get away with it and over time it no longer is a matter of taking a risk to pull shit, it's a standard operating procedure.
That said, I can't help but feel he won't quite be able to get away with it this time. To stretch the analogy further than it deserves to be, perhaps this is the lull between when he didn't get penalized on the ice for boarding a dude to the point of concussion and when he gets a call from the league to talk about it. You can't really weasel out of making a game forever when other people's money is tied up in it, so something will have to happen soon-ish that can't be completely buried like it usually is, though the pessimist in me thinks the result might not be the salt caverns we're hoping it will be.
Absolutely agreed on that point.
Anita's output is just lackluster, not non-existent. She did exactly what she'd done before and applied it to video games, which while lazy (at both an intellectual and production level), still resulted in content that can be viewed on the internet to this day (even if large portions of the b-roll weren't actually her work but that's not the point). She's built a cult of personality around herself with a complimentary fanbase of non-trivial proportions, and if the results of her latest crowdfunding effort and the fees she accidentally admitted to charging for speaking engagements are any indication, she can pull fairly large chunks money from her fanbase at the non-triggering snap of a finger.
That is exactly the gig Brianna wants (though as a feminist game dev godzilla rather than pop-culture critic) but will never be able to have if his current trajectory of personal and professional choices is any indication.

Looks like Wu found something else to "implement". Thank the Lord Jaysus for Twitter followers, they suggest things that you can use as en excuse to procrastinate even more. And if all else fails you can redo the lighting entirely!

Edit: You'd think that one of the leading authorities on the Unreal engine would know about Light Shafts. Looking at the documentation on this I'd hazard a guess and say that implementing this would make the game literally unplayable. The already bad optimization in tandem with Light Shafts might just make your PC melt.
