You weren't exaggerating. I quit after ~45 minutes and I counted 22 snarl tics. Here is but a sampling:

When John/Brianna is not producing snarl tics he is otherwise ticcing. The entire time that Miguel is talking John's lips are twitching and his eyes are darting; the snarl tic is the worst tic rather than the only tic.

View attachment 78629

Also, John doesn't really listen to what Miguel/Katherine is saying (in his faux English accent). John just waits for Miguel to finish, says "that's well stated" and just goes off on some non sequitur that is about him. To his credit Miguel tries at times to talk about issues instead of himself but John just talks about himself rather than trying to engage with what Miguel is saying.
Do we have a thread about Cross yet? Puerto Rican from the Bronx with fake-ass accent is super lolcowish in my opinion.

Is she smart though? From my point of view, everything points to her being incredibly stupid.

She (supposedly) entered some sort of engineering programme at UofM at age 19 (held back in school?) and very quickly dropped out to take a softer subject, and dropped out of that as well. If we're to believe her personal mythology she has always wanted to be a game developer since a young age, yet since UofM doesn't offer software engineering/computer science at the time she can't have been trying to develop skills to further that goal. Indeed, choosing to go to UofM itself bespeaks someone who really didn't have much in the way of options, it's hardly the most prestigious university. Even in less mathematically vigorous subjects, she spent a decade trying and failing to get a degree. I can't imagine how many courses you have to fail in that time to manage that. In my country you'd be "required to withdraw" long before you ever got to that point, but I guess in the US it's more about the money the university makes.

Then we have R60's development. By all accounts when they started, Wu set herself up to be the developer but very quickly realised she was in over her head. She was left doing all the administrative, organisational and interpersonal stuff on the game while Maria (who, lets not forget, was a secretary before she started working on the game) did all the technical heavy lifting. Even if you'd never seen the game, I think that speaks volumes about how technically complicated it was to create. Yet Wu still couldn't hack it.

Wu isn't smart, she's just delusional. She's thoroughly convinced that everything she does is great, despite all the evidence to contrary in sales/adoption/public opinion. Everything points to her being a huge drag on the development of R60, and now she's the only one working on it, it's been perpetually about to release for over a year now. Nothing Wu has ever done has shown even the tiniest hint of calculation, it has just been bouncing from one disaster to another.

Wu's reasonably intelligent. That's not her problem.

The thing is, whilst she's fairly smart, she doesn't understand human interaction at all, and believes, likely due to her upbringing and no small amount of Atsimu, that she is entitled to success by default. This kind of behavior plagues people with antisocial personality disorder; the ones that aren't successful either wind up in prison, or like Brianna Wu, discredited. We've seen it before, many times - Jay Geis being the most obvious example (though it's arguable if his was sociopathy or simple undiagnosed atsimu) in many lolcows we've covered.

Wu failed college multiple times. One might wonder why Wu didn't just use a diploma mill to get the credentials she sought (it's not the first time she's gone out of her way to falsify info on a document, amirite, Lauren Milovy), but Wu considers such actions beneath her. Going for it would be admitting she's a gigantic failure (the internet could pick up on it in a matter of days) and Wu will never do that due to her massive ego and pride. So Wu goes to college. Several times, thinking it'll be easy. She fails each time and drops out because she isn't there to learn, she's there to use it as a stepping stone to succeed, just like every other content-creating cow. She doesn't take it seriously and the entire thing repeats. And because she's been insulated from the consequences of her actions, over and over - first by her parents, then by Frank Wu - she's never learned a fucking thing. And that's by choice.

If Wu were genuinely stupid, she'd have been significantly less entertaining to cover.

Hubris is at the core of virtually every lolcow's downfall, to the point where it can be a rule that if you're capable of genuine self-reflection, you are, by definition, not a lolcow. Brianna shows this hubris - it's practically her fucking defining trait. Wu has a hilariously exaggerated level of pride, fucking Vegeta levels of self-confidence, and utter fucking contempt for other people. She never admits to failure. And, like all unsuccessful sociopaths, it shows - Wu's risen to the top of the completely dysfunctional Giant Spacekat Studios.

Wu has an attitude that does not allow her to learn from mistakes - because she believes she never made one in the first place. At no point will Wu ever admit to fucking up, and if she does, plausible deniability will be her first recourse the nanosecond the shit hits the fan. Because of this, Wu has a genuine loathing for everyone beneath her at Giant Spacekat, because she sees them as the source of all problems. She's adored by her syncophants on Twitter and she has forged this into a world view where she's invulnerable, all the while accomplishing nothing of note.

And that's exactly why most of the readers of this thread are here, really.
It's unsustainable.

There's going to come a time - and it's fucking inevitable, people, history has taught us this - where Wu is going to go down in flames, and it's going to be glorious. It may be at the hands of the Farms digging through her dirty laundry, a colleague spilling their guts to a reporter, or simply one Ween that pushes her too far, but it's going to happen. She's smart, but it's her hubris - not her lack of intelligence - that makes her such a compelling lolcow.

1. Are you currently active on Social Media? If yes, how has your online activity changed since the incident that changed your life?
Yes, I'm still very active on social media! Unfortunately since then, my interactions with strangers are much more guarded. Even when people are acting normal or even nice, there's the possibility that they have an ulterior motive. There was one guy who liked a few of my tweets so I responded a few times. A few days later him and others started attacking me, contacting business partners and harassing them about their connections to me. When his account was shut down for violating Twitter's policies, he started a blog where he posted all about me a few times a month. I'm definitely much more wary of people now.

For fuck's sake, Brianna, Geth was never attacking you. He was being honest, and you got him perma-banned for it.

And the Geth thing is fucking hilarious. He confirmed Twitter never told him why he was suspended (and they usually don't tell you anyway), but Wu is the one insisting he was perma-banned.

And boo fucking hoo, he recorded their conversations, caught Wu libeling his ass, and left a public record of the backstabbing, and now Wu is too chickenshit to even name him lest he make good on his promise to drag John's sorry ass into court for violating their agreement not to piss each other off.

Indeed, choosing to go to UofM itself bespeaks someone who really didn't have much in the way of options, it's hardly the most prestigious university.

Even at a not particularly prestigious university, John was a legacy admission because of his father. Not just once but three times. He failed every time, as well as failing at any other university, apparently never even obtaining a degree after something like nine years.

I don't know how intelligent Flynt really is, but not being able to get a degree in all of those years shows a definite lack of commitment. Just doing coursework should have seen him end up with something.

Wu is just not very intelligent.

Sometimes someone pretty intelligent like an engineer or programmer is clumsy in English, has bad spelling, or whatever, but almost all Wu's time was in the liberal arts. Wu still consistently misspells "fancy" words when attempting to look intelligent. This is a very common sign of a dumbass putting on airs.

Wu is just pretty dumb. Not actually retarded, but solidly in the average range. If Wu scores higher on an IQ test, Wu underperforms.

I'd say Wu has determination wether she has intellect or not... ehhhh. As noted by Rev 60 it did a lot of ripping from other games without being particularly loving of the stuff it ripped. Socially Unconscious (both the comic and the novel) strike me as one long, mind-melting power fantasy.

Which kind of makes a lot of sense. An awful lot of Brianna's "thing" seems to be driven by power fantasy. She has power on Twitter, she has "power" as a game dev because she made one (albeit one that is a commercial failure).

Time and time again Wu relies on the majority of her critics being people who haven't attempted to do what she has at least attempted to do and uses it as an endless bulwark. In my opinion, plenty of independent creative folks don't have the necessary predatory instinct to turn what they love to do into a business, they'd like someone else to handle or manage that side for them (hence the multi-channel networks, things like DFTBA handling merch sales etc) and this plays out heavily into Wu's favour.

Wu also have the luck of the draw when it came to money, both with SOCOM and GiantSpacekat, finding individual funders to bankroll both when the main responce to banks would've been gog-eyed at what appears to have been the business plan in both of:

STEP ONE: MAKE THING
STEP TWO: ?????
STEP THREE: Profit?

End of the day, it's a pretty damn hollow victory when your life can be summed up by; "Well, at least you tried?"

Brianna Wu, a prominent figure in the video game industry, stood her ground against misogyny and for that she received death threats. Found out what life for Brianna is like now.

2. What type of support did you seek in the aftermath of what happened to you?
At first, and for a few months, I was in shock. I didn't know where to turn, who to ask for help, or even how to ask for help. There wasn't a lot of information out there for victims of these kinds of attacks. My husband was my rock, but just by being associated with me he was sometimes under attack too. I am not in touch with my family, so my team at Giant Spacekat, and my husband, I would say they are the ones that have kept me going every day. They've kept me from quitting.

3. If you had the chance to re-do the tweet/post that changed your life, what, if anything, would you do differently?
I don't regret standing up to Gamergate at all. It was the right call, and my actions were a turning point in changing the public perception of them. When I was initially targeted, a lot of people did think it was about ethics in game journalism. That said I do wish I'd gotten help with handling harassment on Twitter earlier. I wish I'd stepped away more, because being that hurt and angry in a public forum wasn't good for me.

4. What, if any, ramifications from your incident are you still experiencing today?
Too many to name… I'm still reporting dozens of tweets and accounts for harassment and impersonation every day. I've spent way too much time in the last year working behind the scenes trying to make this whole situation easier for women who are attacked. There's been progress, absolutely, with social media companies like Twitter starting to evolve their policies to be more inclusive of minority groups who are most often targeted. But, it takes a lot of time, and I have a business to run. I've done a lot of public speaking too, but that has its challenges; because you never know who is going to show up at a speaking engagement and start shouting at you halfway through your presentation. I have to have a security presence at most of the engagements I agree to. Even though it's just a precaution, it's a necessary one. It's too big a risk to take.

5. Have you had any other life-changing incidents on the Internet since the one we profiled?
Not in the same way, but I find myself dragged into drama on a weekly basis. The problem with becoming well known is everyone wants to walk by and "punch up," at you. It's exhausting.

6. What advice would you give to other people on managing social media?
I'd say be willing to admit your mistakes when you make them. The public will forgive you almost anything if you're honest about it. Also, don't be afraid to throw the Twitter keys to a friend and walk away when it becomes overwhelming.

7. What do you feel are positive aspects of the Internet (if any)?
The Internet has done so much for so many. It allows women and minorities to have access to education, training, and information that sometimes isn't available to them for whatever reason. It helps us stay connected and see all the angles of a story when it breaks. There is tremendous good that can be done, and is already being done, online. The real question is whether or not the communities that rule the Internet can make their spaces safer for users, especially women and minorities.

Did she seriously try to take credit for being "the one to expose GamerGate for what they truely are"? Christ, there's ego and then there's EGO.

More of Wu tacitly admitting that she was John Flynt by calling the "John Flynt" Twitter accounts "impersonation." :story:

Also tacitly admitting that Natalie isn't real, since Wu is the one monitoring her own Twitter for harassment. I guess Natalie gets $2,000 a month just to sit around and be eternally pregnant.

I always felt that Wu's defining trait wasn't that she was intelligent, but blinded by her ego, but that she was simply more cautious with an ego that makes it hard for her not to seek attention even when it would have horrible results. There's just too much evidence of her saying and doing things that even a reasonably intelligent person would realize is a bad move. She tells blatant lies and struggles to keep everything she says consistent, she seems to think that fucking around with pre-existing models in an engine designed to allow even the most scrubby designers make a video game is a feat that is far above a normal person, and she generally seems to completely lack an understanding of how the professional world works. Really she's not notable because she's a brilliant schemer or anything, she's just good at sperging out without showing her powerlevel too much while also having much more influential people she's suckered into bailing her out when she loses it.

My girlfriend just walked in on me looking at this and her reaction was "Oh my god, what the hell is that?"

I've never seen Wu mention anything related to Fire Emblem before this. Does he even have a 3DS?
