Kiwis need to let this go. There are lots of software engineers with no degree whatsoever. Pressing Wu on this issue will only backfire because everyone in the field has worked with a great person with no degree.

Now, feel free to press her for talking about her degree when she doesn't have one, or for taking 10 years to not get one.

Sure, you can go with that. Documenting Wu's hilarious and repeated failures to meet her own deadlines is a hobby of mine.

Wu is in the Boston area. If you went around there telling people "hey, guys, this person things they are a software engineer, but they never graduated," you will have people with PhDs in CompSci from Harvard and MIT telling you that you are a stupid asshole, especially for someone building computer games.

How does Wu never studying engineering of any sort, degree or no degree, nor actually working as an engineer on her shit (she hired people for that), factor into your defense of Brianna Wu Master Engineer?

Never. Not having any degree is only the first of many reasons Wu is not a "software engineer" or any other kind of engineer and it is an outrage for Wu to make this ludicrous claim over and over again.

There are tons of software engineers who don't have a degree. I think its an industry where experience and ability tends to trump any kind of academic accredidation, unless you are doing really sophisticated stuff (machine learning, analytics, crypto, etc). Unlike other engineering disciplines, there is no regulated licensing process, or board review. I would not consider someone claiming to be a "software engineer" without a degree to be an invalid claim. On the flip side though, I would consider someone who is a proven, public, pathological liar, claiming to have a degree, while not actually having a degree, to be someone who, while consistent in pathology, is not very credible.

The difference is that John bleats CONSTANTLY about how HIGHLY QUALIFIED he is and berates people for mansplaining and generally acts like a fucking asshole. Harping on his lack of degree hammers home how hypocritical and nasty John is to people who are (for whatever reason) actually trying to help.

Then couch it in those terms. "You call yourself an engineer, with no degree and the only things you've done are things that you hired someone else do with money that was gifted to you?"

Start with the lack of degree and then it is easy to move on to the lack of any achievements whatsoever that an engineer would actually have. Wu also can't pull the "but lots of engineers don't have a degree" because that would mean admitting to not having a degree. And even if Wu did, then it would be nice to ask about the feats of engineering that would accompany being a real engineer.

This would involve actually having a setting where you could question Wu and Wu would have to answer.

Like a deposition.

It's a dream of mine to see Wu deposed and later cross examined some day, or series of days.
