During normal, casual conversation, most people will have split second expressions that, if frozen, will look awkward and goofy. Part of learning to speak in public is having an exceptional awareness of your body language and controlling it accordingly. If you watch executives or politicians speak, you'll notice that most of them have a very calm or stoic expression at all times, emote gently and gracefully, and avoid exaggerated poses or expressions. It's a thing you learn to do when you're in the public eye a lot.
John is unaccustomed to that kind of thing, because he's never been in any position of importance, nor does he have anyone to teach him how to act on camera. Add this to the fact that his natural body language is pretty obnoxious and exaggerated, and you have the ocean of unflattering still frames we now enjoy.

If we're reaching, an Ambien OD with other depressants could have lowered the respiratory function to the point of causing a hypoxic brain injury. But it's far more likely Wu is just a sped without self-awareness.

Eh, I think what Wu did is how most addicts got into it: self-medicating and dosage increase. That's literally the only way to get addicted to zolpidem anyway. OD'ing probably was never a real danger.

Respiratory stress/failure takes a reasonable amount of it though, even with the help of stronger CNS depressants.

Even politicians have those. Every political campaign has some out of context photo where some candidate is made to look foolish or silly.

Wu's are of a different order, though. They look outright insane and inhuman, like Wu is some kind of alien monster wearing a human skin. The fucked up expressions are like nothing I've seen outside of crazy people, like the shit schizophrenics do from tardive dyskinesia.

Wu reminds me of Vincent D'Onofrio in Men in Black as the alien bug in human skin.
