John Flynt/Brianna Wu has real issues with gay men and the only times he's identified as such openly was when he thought he could get something out of it. Back when he was heavily pushing SOCCON the book and animated series, he really wanted to be a seen as a straight man probably because he thought it was more marketable image at the time. During the last stint at Ole Miss, he was very open in his identity as a gay man but this was the mid-2000s and the LGBT community had a bigger presence on college campuses by now so he probably believed he now had a built-in, supportive audience for his shitty characters. However, by the time he was transitioning to Brianna Wu, John went back to being very adamant that he was STRAIGHT! and that him becoming a woman justifies the identity. Part of it is likely the anti-homosexuality rhetoric Brianna was around during for most of her life but I think another part of it is that John Walker Flynt probably didn't have a very successful love life. It must have driven the little narcissist mad knowing that there were people out there who turned him down.
Notice how everyone Wu knows is a female? It's as though Wu only knows women who have made a name for themselves despite all odds in male-dominated fields. Or they've killed themselves from harassment. That happens also.
