Breatherarianism or Inedia is the belief you can survive without eating food. People have claimed that they can live, and have lived for decades without eating any food. They often claim to have gotten nutrients from the sun and air and nothing else.

Well, multiple people have died from starvation from it, despite that it still has it's followers.

Jashmuheeen:
is one of it's major proponents (born Ellen Greve) claimed that she can live for months without any kind of nourishment besides a cup of tea. She when monitored by a tv crew had her health deplete, until they stopped monitoring her. She claimed the results were from pollution. 4 deaths have been linked to her teachings, which she denies responsibility for.

Wiley Brooks:
The founder of the Breatharian Institute of America. He lectures people on breatharianism, and has for over 30 years. His goal is to get as many people as possible to "Earth Prime" before March,23 2016. He was observed once in 1983 leaving a 7-eleven with "a slurpee, hot dogs, and twinkies".He did admit to breaking his fast several times, claiming "it adds balance". When starting out Breatharianism, he suggests to eat the double-quarter pounder with cheese from Mcdonalds, which contains a "base frequency" and to drink diet coke which is "liquid light". He also charges money for his teachings with prices ranging from $100,000 to one billion dollars.

Hira Rattan Manek:
Claims to live on Water and sunlight, with some tea, and coffee occasionially. He says that sun gazing is the source of his powers. He was once caught on camera eating at a San Fransisco restaurant.

I've heard of people who have tried to purposefully see how long they could go without food and water but I would have never concluded that there was a whole movement about that shit. This seems like fasting on crack.

If not understanding the basics of human metabolism can make you rich, why would I ever do an honest job in my life?

I can see delusional people getting into this. Promise of feeling better, lighter and free and also not having to pay for food anymore.
But the moment a guy tells one about living on "chi" though, is the moment one should call it bullcrap. Why is just settling on a healthy diet so hard, but you have people paying thousands of bucks on bullshit?

I first ran into someone who believed in breatharianism though they themselves did not practice it. The person was a vegan, however, of the Buddhist variety.

Knowing how triggered people are about the treatment of groups, you know the Breatharian support groups will compete with the pro/anti-GamerGate Personal Armies.

Nah this is cool. They are martyring themselves so I can eat more snacks.

The vast majority of them haven't died, because the vast majority of them actually fucking eat.

Only some really stupid ones starve. The rest are sneaking out for burgers and shit.

It's still pretty stupid to pretend to be doing this bullshit that makes no sense, but they're not dumb enough to die for it, mostly.

If you want to get technical about it, there's two main variants. There's the 'normal' breatharians, who still practice eating and drinking for cultural reasons.

And then there's the true breatharians, who... well, believe that breathing and solar power is enough.

It's the latter group that are caught sneaking out and eating or turning up dead.

The only "true" breatharian, though, is either dead or dying.

The first group at least doesn't lie about actually eating, they just lie about the reason.

The second is a group of either liars or corpses or soon to be corpses.

Does a feeding tube count as eating?

Really surprised nobody's mentioned Valeria Lukyanova, aka the living Barbie, yet.

She's not a Breatherarian now but she was at one point. It's not even the weirdest thing about her.

Also, here's a source for the "four deaths can be linked to Jasmuheen's teachings" claim.

Back in the 1900s, there was a quack doctor in Washington State named Linda Hazzard who would force her patients to fast until they were delirious, then coerce them to sign wills naming her as the beneficary. She killed more than 40 patients this way.

Yeah, I once knew someone who believed that certain Enlightened Individuals could live for years without food or water. Amazingly, she was also a recent graduate of one of the nation's top law schools, and I often cite her as an example of how someone can be at once book-smart, yet common sense-stupid.
