On Thursday, Buzzfeed News announced that it would be shutting down, with CRO Edgar Hernandez and COO leaving the company and layoffs being announced.

In an email from Buzzfeed CEO Jonah Peretti, said, "we are reducing our workforce by approximately 15 percent today across our Business, Content, Tech, and Admin teams, and beginning the process of closing Buzzfeed News.

"Additionally, we are proposing headcount reductions in some international markets," the email added.

Peretti said that Hernandez and Baesler have left the company, with President Marcela Martin taking on "responsibility for all revenue functions effective immediately."

"While layoffs are occurring across nearly every division, we’ve determined that the company can no longer continue to fund Buzzfeed News…" Peretti wrote.

Peretti stated that "HuffPost and Buzzfeed Dot Com have signaled that they will open a number of select roles for members of Buzzfeed News. These rules will be aligned with those divisions’ business goals and match the skills and strengths of many of Buzzfeed NEws’s editors and reporters."

"We raised this idea with the News Guild this morning and look forward to discussing it further. Moving forward, we will have a single news brand in HuffPost, which is profitable, with a loyal direct front page audience."

Peretti explained that the decision to shut down the news branch of the company came about because of the pandemic, "a fading SPAC marked that yielded less capital, a tech recession, a tough economy, a declining stock market, a decelerating digital advertising marked and ongoing audience and platform shifts."

"Dealing with all of these obstacles at once is part of why we’ve needed to make the difficult decisions to eliminate more jobs and reduce spending," he added.

This is a breaking story and will be updated

Yes. The end of woke culture is among us. The return of the 2000s is coming back in full swing.
Highly doubtful.

Moving, and maybe even illuminating. In the end, no matter what they say, life on the Internet really is a serious business. It matters. But the tricky thing is that it matters above all because it mostly doesn't — because it conjures bits of serious human connection from an oceanic flow of words, pictures, videoclips, and other weightless shadows of what's real. The challenge is sorting out the consequential from the not-so-much. And, if Rich Kyanka's steely equanimity is any example, the antics of the Goons and /b/tards might actually sharpen our ability to make that distinction. To those who think the griefers' handiwork is simply inexcusable: Well, being inexcusable is, after all, the griefers' job. Ours is to figure out that caring too much only gives them more of the one thing they crave: the lulz.
Unless you get articles with ending statements like this, which for something like Wired will never ever happen again. Unfortunately.

It was a matter of time, really. They started laying off hundreds of employees like a couple years ago after they have fallen completely out of relevance.

Most journalists are already just reposting corporate press statements, and most of their original work is just Op Ed masquerading as 'informed opinion'. People are sick of "anonymous sources" that just happen to parrot the Author's personal politics. They can get people who actually understand an issue talking about it on youtube.

They should have been thinking ahead and done whatever it took to get Trump Reelected, because without him they aren't selling shit.
It didn't really matter in 2020. Trump didn't need the media just like he doesn't really need Twitter. If they are smart, they won't try to ignore him in 2024. Not that it matters. Trump is already well known. They can ignore him all they want, and it won't stop him. They might as well just ride the wave.

Who the fuck uses Buzzfeed News as a source of information? Even CNN is a better news source than that piece of crap.
