The postwar United States was great as a family could live a solid middle class life with one wage earner and it could be done by men without a high school diploma. That said people weren't as informed, you could still die from diseases we've eradicated and everyone was forced to confirm to the prevailing social norms of the times. Autism wasn't even defined and I'm sure there were mildly annoying autists unfortunate to be locked up in lunatic asylums after given electroshock treatments and/or prefrontal ice pick lobotomies.
